how to program engine/tranny computer
 

I am looking to change the shift points on my '99 ES AT.
Does anybody know how to hook up my laptop to the engine computer and modify the settings?

is this even possible ?

if so sounds like a good Idea.

Send me an ECU and I'll play with it. I've hacked code before, by which I mean figuring out what the hell is going on. But an ECU is an especially complex and undocumented item. So there probably won't be anyone alone outside of Mazda that can figure it out.

I have programmed NC machines before usingmy desktop before and this one should be no different. But I need to know how to connect and which editor to use to edit the code.

I actually need to change the 1 downshift point on my AT....the one when it shifts to first gear when coming to a stop.

as far as upshifts are concerned, Mazda has done an extremely good job and I have no intentions of messing those.

Yeah I posted a theory that they had a flash memory chip inside. There pretty much has to be one if they are reprogramming it again at the dealership. Programming flash memory chips is very easy but the problem is what to put there. You have to decode Mazda's system for coding the ECU. You have to learn which 1's and 0's represent the data you are interested in. This can be a real pain in the ass depending on the size of the flash chip installed. For small amounts of data you can use trial and error and eventually figure it out. For large amounts of data it can be pretty much impossible to reverse engineer the code. That is why I said somebody from Mazda would probably have to do it. They have documentation saying exactly what bit does what and so they can program custom ECU setups. Anyway I'm not willing to tear my ECU up to prove a theory but if someone comes across one at the junkyards or something that would be cool.

And I don't know what Chikoo meant by NC either.

But let me add one additional clarification here:

If the ECU is using a standard flash memory chip you can very easily rip all of the 1's and 0's off of that chip and copy them to another chip. Which is what I brought up in the first place. It would be very easy, if you had another ECU (say the MP3's) to get that data on to yours, although I would definitely do this on a junkyard ECU and not the one from the factory. Copying is easy, modifying is the hard part.

You can go to your dealership and get them to reprogram your ecu with the MP3 ecu and get about 10-15 (est.) hp out of your car!!

At my dealership they said they could do it for $50. I'm sure that the others will do it also!!

Good luck. Get it done then. My local dealership says they can't reflash our ECU's unless they have an MP3 ECU to plug into the computer first. It reprograms from the main Mazda site and is not supposed to be done to our ECU's since the emissions certification is different for the 2 cars. The dealers can get massively fined by the EPA and get in major trouble with Mazda for doing this.

Too bad there isn't a hand programmer available for pretty much any import. YOu could do what I'm going to do and get a Greddy E-Manage with a laptop total about 900 bucks but full ignition and fuel curve tunign is avaiable or you can just get the basic unit for 350 and control fuel but I don't know if it can control shift points that would be a project for superchips, jet or M2 performance.
