I do my own changes, but I've heard WalMart only charges about $25 for an oil change using Mobile1. $70 is steep. Even for CN $.

Brycer, I asked Canadian Tire some time ago also about the price of a regular oil change and they said $20. Then I asked how about if I bring my own oil, which I was thinking of buying at the same store that day of the oil change. He said its still the price of the reguler oil change. I asked if there was a discount because they did not have to provide oil anymore, and he said no, and that on changing to Mobil 1 costs $70, which makes all his previous statements invalid.
I think the price is rape so later I went to did it in some garage, and they charged me $50 for it, which IMO is fair considering Mobil 1's 4L jug $19 premium over Catrol GTX's.

I do my own now....but when I DID take it to wally world for he convinece of it...and they charged like 18.95 for their basic oil/filter change....THEN if you wanted any other kind of oil OTHER than what they normally used (quaker state) then all you did was pay the difference between that and what you told them to put in....so whom ever said $70 is LOONEY TOONS!!! don't allow them to TOUCH your car!

I may be wrong but the first change to synthetic is more expensive because they have to flush the system out. It was something like $50 (US) for the filter, oil and flush for my friends focus. Now he can just pour the Mobil 1 in his self. Is the flush required or is that dealer bullshit?

azrakain May-5th-2002 02:22 PM

dealers definetly like to bullshit. I am gonna ask him what their reasoning was behind the flush.

I paid 44 for my first syn change. After that I decided to do them myself. Now it cost me about 17 to do my own.

I did my own - WalMart charged $24 CDN for 4 litres of Mobil 1 tri-synthetic, and I bought a filter from Mazda for $6 CDN. So, $30CDN to do it myself, which is about $18.75US which goes along with what others here are saying.

Cheers,

Eric

the FLUSH....its reasoning? to remove all or as much of the PREVIOUS type of oil as possible....we do this at work with some of the equipment we have.......what the dealer probably did was put like three quarts in....crank up the car....and let it circulate with NEW synthetic, then drain it out with any entrained oil that was left over....then they fill it up with the new stuff again....

SUPPOSEDLY this is to clean out your system.....

needless to say....the noticable difference is so negliable its rediculus....

just a way for the dealer to get deeper into your pocket.

Is mobil 1 like one of the best synthetic oils out? or are they just one of the cheapest, but still good?

azrakain May-5th-2002 07:13 PM

as sir nuke stated they put a few quarts in and then drained it, and refiled it. They said the syn oil re-bonds after the flush. Mobil 1 is one of the best syn oils out there.

Mobil 1 is a good synthetic....and its been around for a long time as well. LOTS of testing, lots of trials.....lots of proven results.

I heard that synthetic oil is good for metal parts, but worse for seals and other rubber parts in the engine than regular oil. Is that true?

SedanMan May-6th-2002 10:49 AM

$45-50 US should be "normal" price.
Thats about 70$ CDN. So it sounds like an okay price to me.

Don`t you need a filter made for synthetic oil for it to work best?

Note that there's been some discussion about Mobil changing the formulation of Mobil-1 when they jumped from SJ to SL. It now appears to be much more like Castrol's Syntec, though there's still debate going on.

The VW turbo forums have some discussion of this, I posted a link a few days ago.
