It's Mazda :) . There is a tiny bit of info on it in the Protege FAQ, the link is up top to the right, then click on "Engine Info" and look for it :).

Are you sure hes not talkin' about the J-Spec ZM engine? Its a 1.5Litre engine w/ variable valve timing and makes 130hp. not bad. paopular engine choice for our cars.
