Homemade CAI 1.6L..... (long!)

Ok I had a Short Ram i made out of a pipe from a Civic intake kit and a cone filter....decided since the Filter got so hot it would burn you that the air I was pulling was way too hot..but I had already cut the munting piece from my airbox to mount my MAF so that made this install easy...sooo here's what I did: My dad got some 80 schedule 3" pvc and an elbow..didnt work...the regular 3"pvc is too wide for the silicone connector on the filter, the car fittings are 3"OD and the pvc is 3"ID....went to Home Depot, they had nothing that would fit....went to Lowes, found that 3" pvc DRAINAGE pipe fits if you push it on there good,so I bought 6 feet of 3" drainage pvc,a 90 elbow and a 45 elbow....measured everything out under the hood and heres what you'll need:cut 9" piece of pvc,5" piece of pvc 4" piece of pvc,1 silicone connector 2 1/2" to 3",cone filter(I got one with velocity stack in middle for more flow),high temp engine paint, and I got a sticker to make it look "professional ;o)....clean all the pvc inside and out VERY good to prep for painting and to make sure nothing gets sucked into your intake...also sand down the outside of the pvc to roughen the surface and de-bur the edges where you cut it....then paint each piece seperately with light coats of the engine paint....2 was enough for me,and once it was dry enough to handle the engine's heat bakes it good...heres the assembly..relocate your over flow bottle by drilling a new hole..keep your stock rubber intake hose and the piece that the MAF mounts to...then the silicone adapter mounts to that....then the 9" piece of pvc will mount to the 3" opening on the silicone adapter, make sure the hose clamp is nice and tight...then glue the 90 elbow pointing down to the opening in the fender wall...wrap one end of the 5" peice with 1 layer of duct tape..then glue the other end of the 5" piece and put this thru the opening in the fender wall....the taped end will be the joint that isnt glued....this will allow you to disassemble the intake if needed...then you'll need to take the splash guard off the finish the assembly and install the filter....once this is done push the 45 elbow onto the taped end of the 5" peice of pvc pointing to the front of the car...then glue the 4" piece of pvc to the elbow...mount the filter to the final piece(this will require some elbow grease) and tighten your hose clamps...put your splash guard back up and inspect your final assembly...as long as it looks good start 'er up and look for CEL...if it comes on,shut it off diconnect the battery terminal, step on the brake for 30 seconds, and reconnect, and try again, should be fine.....take for a run and push it hard....I got much better response, revved stronger, pulled harder and throatier sound than the short ram....finished it off with a little decal on the long piece to look professional...I'll post some pics asap...hope this helps my fellow 1.6ers out there!!!!

How about a pic of the MAF when it's totally disconnected. I was thinking of doing a home job, but I'd like to see how the piece would have to fit onto the MAF.

Nice Job, btw! How much did it cost in the end?

The best way to connect the MAF is by use of some rubber hose segments and just fit it in-line with the pipe. Here's a pic of my Injen CAI and how they fit the MAF.

Hope this helps!

What about the temperature sensor Slomo? Perhaps the 1.6L does not have the temperature sensor in the stock air box like the 2.0L does.

What brand filter did you use? I think I'm going to use a no-name filter I found at the local Autozone. It's not cleanable like a K&N but at $20 instead of $50 I'll just replace it when needed.

I'm looking forward to some pics!

How about paragraphs.

I'm gonna borrow my friends digital cam tommorow and I'll post some pics.....no seperate IAT on the 1.6L....built in with the MAF...I used the APC intimidator filter with velocity stack, but a K&N would probably flow a LITTLE better....but like said previously said $20 vs $50...I'm a pocket tuner.:D ...as far as the paragraphs: paragraph this english teacher :the finge

btw cost is about $12 not including the filter, which was $20:p
