HELP.....muffler install not working!!!!!!!!!!!

hi guys, i could use some help here, since i want m car functional for tonight. heres the deal:

after a long struggle to piece together the correct combination of pipes to get my new muffler to stick out the way i wanted, i have sort of succeded. i have attached everything, with some leaks, and now need to support the muffler.

the way it is now, the pipe is just resting on top of the rear axel, and ive been spending hours trying to find a way to hang it like the stock muffler hung. what has everybody done that installed an exhaust? please tell.......

TheMAN March-22nd-2003 11:07 AM

you sound like you don't know what exactly is going on... do me a favor and bring it to a muffler shop and have it done before you break anything on your car... there's not a lot we can do to help you since it's obvious that you are not installing something that's "bolt on"

carguycw March-22nd-2003 03:24 PM

Ditto the last two posts; don't screw around with homebuilt clamp-and-screw muffler installation, go to a muffler shop and DO IT RIGHT. They'll probably only charge you $20-$30 to weld it up properly.

Homebuilt installations are totally ghetto; your muffler may fall off, your car may fail state inspection, and exhaust leaks can cause brain damage. :( The only time I would even consider screwing around with a rigged homebuilt system is in an emergency situation- such as being stuck in Baghdad right now.

mygreenmazda March-22nd-2003 08:03 PM

Hey pentium006 do as everyone says take it to a shop. I also had a universal muffler installed and yeah one of my brackets fell after 5 days but since they replaced it I have had no problems and everybody says that it sounds really good. Good luck

ghost323f March-22nd-2003 08:34 PM

yes get it done right, or you will be sparking on the road!!!:D

Maxx Mazda March-22nd-2003 10:55 PM

Well, to have your car ready soon, just do like the rest of the install and keep on using that Duct Tape... Unless you ran out that is...

pentium006 March-23rd-2003 12:36 PM

i took maxx's sugestion and just duct taped it on......actually, i called up a friend whose father it a welder. due to where i wanted it to hang, we couldnt use the stock brackets. it is supported very well though, we enlarged a hole in the chassis that was already there and hung the main support from there.

i may take it to a muffler shop over spring break, when i wont need my car, but its definatly drivable right now.....

thanks guys

*mental note, don't use universal far^H^H^H^H mufflers*

pentium006 March-23rd-2003 01:34 PM

i admit, after all this, i wouldnt do it again, i would wait and save for the racing beat bolt on. i just wanted something on there until i could come up with the cash. i got a pretty good deal on this one and it sounds good though, so im happy.

mygreenmazda March-23rd-2003 11:15 PM

Hey the TheMAN guess what I have a universal muffler and I promise you that I love my car having a clean look. The muffler sounds good as hell, well that is all my friends say and it also looks good :D

whats wrong with a universal muffler. i bought the muffler for 40 bucks, spent 10 bucks on piping and cut off my res and sec car and did all the welding myself...no leaks and its sounds like a mustang until i get to about 4k then the 4 bang sound takes over.

mygreenmazda March-23rd-2003 11:26 PM

I agree with you walight01 it funny how some people will go out there and spend 300 bucks on an exhaust + installation and get the same output as someone buying a muffler for under 150 with custom installation.

walight01 March-23rd-2003 11:39 PM

don't get me wrong, if i HAD the money to dump on the exhaust and still have money for everything i want i would get the racingbeat exhaust. but instead i spend my not so much abundant money on expensive gas and oil.

mygreenmazda March-24th-2003 12:01 AM

walight01 I know what you mean right now gas is expensive and well I'm actually trying to save more for new cams or pulleys so I can keep up with my friends 1998 200sx se-r and good luck with the setup of your exhaust.

walight01 March-24th-2003 12:12 AM

sorry about the post, i meent that i put 93 octane and synthedic oil in my car, but yes gas is high, but its coming down:)

TheMAN March-24th-2003 12:47 AM

that's nice

I guess the el cheapo 10 bucka pipe is made of STEEL with pressed bends huh? Oh yeah, and nice 40 bucka muffler... hope the baffles don't rust out and the glass packs don't thin out :p

guess what? a lot of people (ahem RICERS) just throw on the muffler for SOUND and LOOKS... hence why the universal muffler is popular because they have no concept of getting a better piping!

wow, so broke... gas so expensive...

where's the $3.00/gal sign? hello? since you say you're broke, why don't you get REGULAR gas? you live in texas, so do I. Don't argue with me about the gas price. It's only an average of $1.75 for PREMIUM gas... expensive... riiight... how about you go live in Europe?

gas is high, compared to 3 years ago when it was buck for premium. and when you have to drive 100 miles a day for work, then its gets expensive. oh i have the concept of better piping and know that unless i get mandrel bent pipe (and not go above 2.25 inch unless you have a turbo then you need 3 or higher)it will not yield any performance. i also know that the more bends you have period(unless you have a turbo and then you need x amount of bents to strighten the air out or something....turbo's are wierd) the less gain you will get. i replaced parts of my piping for the sure purpose of sound and looks. if i wanted "performance" i would have bought a RWD V8 that could out handle my car anyways and go faster(not to mention they cost more and get crap for gas millage) or just a car that didn't have a ECU that can't be overridden. i bought a protege for its reliability and looks, not its handleing performance or its inability to go fast without ALOT of cash. if you see a civic crusin down the road that has been lowered, 17" rims, camber correction b/c we all know how bad it is on them, exhaust, tinted windows, boost gauge and a bumpin system, do you automaticly call it a ricer b/c its a civic??? i don't, i think the 97-99 civics are one of teh best looking cars out there. now when he attempts so say its fast then he is a moron(ricer), but just to have a good looking car with a decent sound doesn't make him a sworn enemy he is a person who drives a car and loves cars as we do. wether it be a civic, camero, 79 corila with hand painted racing stripes, its still a person who thinks its cool and thats all that matters. if i am a "ricer" b/c i don't want to throw down 300 on a exhaust b/c i don't have 300 bucks at one time period, and don't care about the 2 wopping hp i lost, then i guess i'm a ricer who drives a riced out protege 5.

TheMAN March-24th-2003 01:34 AM

I'll call that guy driving that civic you described a ricer... that's just me... guess what... when you throw on parts onto a car that don't match up with it, sounds like ass, mismatched colors, halfassed put together, overdone in everything with useless shit... I call that bad taste... yeah it's "unique"... obviously those people have no artistic inspiration or concept of "harmony of looks".... yes, that's basically sums up what bad taste means

TheMAN March-24th-2003 01:36 AM

oh and if you had thoughts of being a taxi driver in europe or hong kong... you might want to reconsider... filling up a pro costs $130 AMERICAN BUCKS to fill up a pro... gas in america expensive? suuure... stop driving SUVs

walight01 March-24th-2003 01:47 AM

i'm not comparing gas with other countrys, i'm just saying what it used to be compared to what it is now. who is to say that the miscolored parts on the guys car are just waiting to be painted b/c maybe he just bought them, or is saving for a 10k dollar paint job. my question to you is, what car is not a ricer car. a "protege" with a good paint job and expensive parts on it that have all the big names??? why can't a neon or cavilier be concidered a cool car and not a ricer??? whats makes a car different from any of the rest, just the name?? if a car is apperence mods only is it a ricer car???

thats why they have the little guy pulling you around in a wagon

TheMAN March-24th-2003 01:56 AM

you're now putting words into my mouth... I never said a damn thing about neons and cavaliers... I don't like them, but at least I respect the people who drive them... I've seen primered cars driving around for years.... same fucking car.... oh and gay colors like hot pink and baby blue are just BAD TASTE.... no sane person will even want it.... it'll even get bad marks at a car show.... when you put together a car tastefully, either with homemade parts, or just shit you bought then it's all cool.... it doesn't even need to have performance parts... ever heard of a show car? a riced out car doesn't fit in any category!

there isn't nother ignorant or racial about that. i said little guy, european, chinese, japanese, or anything in THAT side of the globe are natually small people. if i was going to be racial i would say chink or some other stupid name. your saying b/c a man is black i can't refer to him as a black man. he is black, i didn't say wetback, nigger, or anything else. i'm a pale fat white boy, aslong as thats what they call me, then its perfectly fine.

Actually, that reminds me of something one of my friends used to say... his First Rule of Street Racing:

Never, EVER race a primer gray 1st-generation (67-69) Camaro. It does not matter how fast you think your car is. You will get spanked. :D
