help with changing transmission oil!!
 

I just received my order of redline transmission oil, and i am wondering how hard it is to change it myself. If everyone i called around town thing i am crazy for changing the oil when i only have 21,000 miles on my 01 ES; and the ones that were willing to do it wanted to change the filter or something. Which i really don’t to change a thing ‘just’ swap oils how hard could that be!!!

Auto or manual?

If it's auto, you need to do more than just pull the drain plug to change all the fluid. The pan only holds about 2 quarts out of the total 8 or 9. You don't need a filter change yet (and the filter's worthless anyway, just a screen to keep the big chunks out), but I'd see if someone will hook it up to a "T-tech" machine for you, which flushes & refills all the fluid thru the cooler lines.

If it's a manual, DIY, just get a shop manual. You need to pull out the speedometer cable to get the fluid level right.

Out of curiosity, why the Redline fluid?

It is a manual and i found a shop that did it for me for $23; the main reason i got redline is because it was a pain to get in 2nd gear during the winter and i heard and read that redline helps solve the problem. And by the way driving it around after i got it done i could notice the difference....it shifts smoother :D

No you don't.

There are 2 holes in the transmission. The bottom one is to drain it out and the one on the side to fill it up. When you are filling up the transmission, just keep pouring the oil in the fill hole until the oil pours out of it. This is when you know the transmission is full.

Also, I'd like to see someone try to "pull out the speedometer cable to get the fluid level right" on a 99+ Protege. They'll have a little trouble... because there is no speedometer cable. :p

The Redline fluid should be a little under $25 USD (for 3 quarts), and it is certainly worth it.

Ok, but what makes it worth it? I heard if your tranny fucks, the warranty won't cover it.

If you have the MTX, trust me, you have nothing to worry about. It makes your shifts smoother, and no grinding (or minimizes it!)

Like Linux said, it smooths out shifting and is better for cold driving. Anyways, how could a different gear oil mess up the transmission? It's like saying that using non-factory engine oil could void the warranty. As long as you use the right viscosity, I'm sure you could definitely argue the coverage. If you are still unsure, just have the dealer do it for you. Anyways though, it is a worthwhile and inexpensive improvement!
