One tip is to hit all the bolts with wd-40 around a half hour before you start.

wipe down the header with alcohol and a clean cloth to minimize the oils that will make the header turn ugly.

here's a question:

if one were so inclined could you not clean it thoroughly and then using a brush and some veg? oil, put any designs you wish on it before the first start-up, thus creating permanent cosmetic customization?

that would probably be possible, but its not an instant thing it happends over time with the heat......and also those are different kinds of oil then your skin oil, so theres no telling what kind of effect youd get out of it.
