Header- EGR??

I'm installing a header on my 2000 ES (1.8L) and trying to figure out what to do with what looks like an Exhaust Gas Return line.
Should I just leave it open- or do I need to cap it off?
The header, which was custom made, did not include any provisions for this.

Any help is appreciated.

You should definetaly cap it off, or you will get unfiltered air into the induction manifold.

Alternatively, you can just "hot wire" the EGR control valve so that it will never open. (I do not know exactly how it works)

I do not know what the ECU will think of disengaging the EGR, but it should be safe to try until someone with more knowledge posts another answer :-)

Best regards,
Carsten

Had same issue w/ the egr pipe for my obx header...

I did some research and found out that by not connecting the egr pipe..you will def. fail inspections...also...you will cause the heat in the engine to increase...also..it will cause detonation..b/c the egr returns fuel back to the intake manifold to help the car to run a little richer...

Do a search for Exhaust Gas Recirculator on Yahoo!

Good luck..

I welded it to the header!

Yeah, that pipe somehow cools the intake temps by returning exhaust gas into the intake, I don't get it but it does.

Also, it helps gas mileage, and you'll fail emissions(if you have it) without the EGR hooked up.

I've been testing for Pace Headers in Australia (where i live of course) and the first 15000kms my headers had the EGR capped off (even here it isnt completely legal) but now that f inal production run has been completed they have piped the EGR back into the engine to be reburnt.
In the end, before the car was excelent with driveability etc... but had to clean the tip of the muffler once a week with black smoke buildup due to the exhaust not being burnt orrectly, but now no problem and the car drives even smoother and no black residue from the cold start.
P.s. my 1st cat is removed and the headers have tune dlength pipes into the 2nd header.(legal here in Oz).
thanks
Claude
