Growling noise during accel...

I noticed for the first time today that when I step down on the gas pedal and accelerate from a stand still, there's a growling noise that goes along with it.

I can't exactly tell where it's from and it's not very loud. Iit sounds more like it's from the rear, or maybe underneath me and more on the passenger side, but I guess it could be from under the hood (difficult to tell). I do not hear it if I'm in D and coast from a stand still or coast while driving, nor do I hear it while in reverse and step on the pedal (I think).

My 2002 is approaching 50k miles and has so far been trouble free.

any ideas appreciated

are there any shakes or anything else associated with it? i know my 2003 ES had a growling/rattling noise as i shifted up during acceleration at 1000-3000 rpm. no harsh shakes or anything. i had a suspicion that it was the VTCS. i brought it in to the dealer and i believe they flashed the PCM...they didnt really say what they did, but the receipt said "PCM upgrade."

i also get some clutch chatter when accelerating from a standstill. it has some heavy shaking and vibration as i lift my foot off the clutch at the engagement point. that was never addressed by the dealer when i asked them about it (possibly cuz they dont want to work on the clutch). but this winter it hasnt been as bad as it was last winter -- so maybe they did do something.

that's a helpful answer.

My 02 P5 is doing the same thing. I also have the clutch shutter problem, so I'm removing the transmission this weekend and replacing the clutch next weekend (parts are coming during the week). I'm also planning to replace the wheel bearings, as mine sounds almost like a bad wheel bearing. The other suspect I'm looking at are the driveshafts, but those are pricey to say the least. I'm hoping the wheel bearings fix the problem.
