Getting the right spark plugs.
 
Hi everyone. I was wondering how hard is it to change the spark plugs in the 2002 MP5? What would I need to do? What are the recommended off brand spark plugs for this car, any name brands? Why that name brand?

I would do some research but I have read that NGK- ZFR5F-11 spark plugs are the new recomended plugs to use for the 2.0
I am going to try them myself when I get the chance. They say it REALLY improves throttle response.

Where did you get that info? I checked NGK's site and they do not list that plug for the 2.0 Protege's, just for the 1.6 Protege.

i bought the ngk.s for my 1.6, dont buy the platinum 4's, they burn too hott, and can fuck shit up.

Has anyone changed there own sparkplugs and wires in there MP5? If so, how hard was it? Any hints on how to do it?

it takes less than 30 mins to change plugs on a P5. you remove the 2 coils and 2 spark plug wires connected to them and lay them aside. the coils are held in with 2 small bolts each. then you use your trusty 5/8" spark plug socket along with a 3" or 6" extension and ratchet to remove the plugs. gap the new plugs to the proper gap and reinstall in reverse assembly. plugs are torqued to hand tight then 1/2 to 3/4 turn more. the small bolts holding on the coils are only supposed to be snug, if you tighten them real tight you'll mess them up.
if you actually go out and look under your hood it is pretty self explanitory.

1.6 plugs in a 2.0
 
I put a set of the 1.6 plugs into my P5 last weekend. You can definitely see the difference when you compare the plugs. No problems with install (i.e., nothing hit anything else and it doesn't ping) and it runs fine. Is it better, seems to be but it's hard to be sure without doing a blind test. It ought to help some though, and definitely hasn't hurt anything. I'll see if it has any effect on gas mileage.
