Fuel Pump Filter/Screen
 

has anyone had to change the screen attached to the fuel pump in the gas tank? my car is hesitating really bad and i was going to change my fuel filter but found out that the 3g protege's dont have a regular fuel filter... i know that i have to remove the back seat, and then the gas tank is under there, but i was wondering if anyone had any tips, or could tell me how to relieve the pressure in the fuel lines and how to get the cover off the tank... any help would be much appreciated!!!! thanks

Low pressure filter

I'm new to the site and dont know anything about cars.

I have a 2003 Mazda Protege 40,000 miles. I can see from reading this post that I have a built in fuel filter. However, in this post there is a thread from carguycw.

Carguycw stated that there is a HIGH pressure fuel filter (is this the built-in filter???) and a LOW pressure fuel filter.

Carguycw said he does change the LOW pressure filter.

OK, so now i'm confused.

Please tell me... is there a low pressure filter, must I have it changed, could it also be called something else, where is it located?

From my understanding you dont need to change the fuel filter at all becuase it should last the life of the car.

However if you really want to there is a pick up sock at the end of the fuel pump, and the filter is near the top. If your gonna change one change both.

ive been reading that you arent suppose to change the fuel filter cause it is a life time thing. my problem is that when i accelerate i get major hesitation and chug chug chug sounds from my muffler. ive had it stall out on me once and i have an automatic. i bought a bottle of greese lightning fuel system cleaner and after a half a tank of usage im not seeing any improvements. any other suggestions on what i should do?

I have a problem with my fuel gauge not reading properly. My mechanic said that he needs to get down to the fuel gauge and adjust it. However it wasn't able to do this because the screws that cover the guage are locked in tight and I need to get something or go to someone who can take them out so he could adjust it.

I never knew about the not supposed to change the fuel filter thing though, thanks guys.

First - this is bad troubleshooting and may not fix the original problem.

Any codes?

Hook up a fuel pressure gauge and test pressure.

Next, perform a fuel volume flow X liters/x time.

Let us know the results.

What if it is just a clogged EGR valve?


Amrit - you have a different problem - get the manual and follow the procedure for our car. I am not so sure of the mech you are taking it to right now...

Sounds like it could be Injectors if you dont get a Engine light,
Poor fuel injectors will lead to a half ass detonation will could feel like a what your describing go for a strong dose of a engine cleaner, pour most of it into the tank, and then taste the last drop to clear up your sinus lol

joking about the last part, you would go blind :S

Mazdagirl 9 out of 10 times people head for a fuel filter, that's not the problem. Today's gas just doesn't have all the crappola we did even 15 years ago. Go instead to the electrics/ignition: how many miles on the plugs AND plug wires? Engine cleaner like TECHRON is also a good place to start. Do it just before you are going to be doing an oil change if possible.
