fs-ze or new head????

ok i need a new head cause i broke mine, mazda said that to order a new one will be about 2 grand. how much will they give back for core charge on the broke one that could be machined? corksport offers the fs-ze with approx 30,000 miles on it for 1995.00 plus shipping of course but i dont know where that engine is from also mine only has 10,000 frigin miles on it. should i go for the engine or should i get the new head i really want to know how much i will get back for core charge though any thoughs are welcome justin:)

JustinMP3 November-26th-2002 11:58 AM

o yeah anybody know how much shipping might cost on the FS-ZE i know someone knows whats best i sure the hell dont

How exactly did you "break" your cylinder head?!?

Many common problems with cylinder heads can be fixed by a good machine shop. You need to tell me what's broken before I can comment on the cost of repair vs. installing an FS-ZE.

well i did not actualy break my head i just broke the #7 bolt that connects the intake camshaft off into the head and dont say extract either its FUBAR a machine shop might be able to throw an aluminum weld in there and some how retap but the threads are a different story. I dont think it would be a job for anybody in town know what i mean:)

OK, I'm a little confused... did you (a) break off the bolt in the head, or (b) strip the threads in the bolt hole?

If it's (a), a good machine shop should be able to get the broken bolt out. Trust me, these guys have better tools than you. :D I've broken a hardened EZ-Out screw extractor in a broken bolt in a cylinder head before (long story) and the local machine shop got it out even though my drill bits wouldn't even scratch it.

If it's (b), they can redrill and thread the hole for a slightly larger bolt (if the clearances are tight, they actually make special metric bolts than are 0.3mm oversize for this purpose). If that won't work, they can Heli-Coil the hole (which IMHO is safe because these bolts don't have to hold much torque) or install a stud. I think studs work better than bolts in aluminum cylinder heads anyways. Maybe you should have them replace ALL the camshaft cap bolts with studs so that this won't happen again. :D

If none of your local machine shops can do this, look for one in the next nearest metro area. A good shop SHOULD be able to handle this. They fix this sort of thing all the time. :D

Don't buy the FS-ZE unless you plan on staying N/A, and paying a shitload of money to get power out. Trust me, I know because I bought it for my MP3!
1. You will need the FS-ZE ECU (OBD-I) or a standalone, cause that's the only way you are gonna get serious power out of that engine.

2. I had to have my engine overhauled because of gouged cylinder walls. I lost compression, and oil. You never know what you are gonna get from Japan. In the process, I put in some lower compression pistons (same as US spec factory)

3. For less money, you can get the engine fixed, and drop in the cams at the same time to save money.

I spent a lot of money to get right back to sqaure one, and then turboing it. Don't make the mistake I made.

thanks buddy that is just the responce i was looking for now i know what i want to do. i am going to suck it up and get a new head damn i just wish i could have spent the $$$$ on something else like a TURBO

carguycw November-28th-2002 10:46 PM

Ditto TheMAN's comment. Re-read my advice from the previous post and consult a good machine shop first! It is probably not FUBAR! Please don't waste your money!

BTW do you distrust all machine shops, or what?

JustinMP3 November-28th-2002 11:44 PM

no i just dont want to go through the trouble of pulling off my head and all of that bs i dont even know how to take it off without breaking something else i am very discouraged now about working on my engine:(

JustinMP3 November-29th-2002 09:07 AM

well i dont want to spend a grand towing it from machine shop to shop i dont like towing cause they already scratched my f-ing rims any other ideas

First, it is my understanding that the ZE head casting is the same as the American head casting, so in otherwords the only thing you are gaining if the ZE intake cam, and perhaps some tighter springs. . ..

Second, is this a joke. . . are you serious? Scraping a entire cylinder head because of a broken cam bolt. . . You are crazy. The heads coming off the car eitherway. You can spend a rediculous $2000 for a new head or ZE head, and be virtually no better of than you were before, or you can take that $2000 and repair the head you have, custom Ferrera valve, dual springs, titanium locks and retainers, 5 angle valve job, aggressive port & polish job, intake and exhaust port match, resurface the head polish the combustion chamber and still take a couple hundred bucks. And you will have yourself a head that will make some REAL power. Either way the head has to come off the car. The choice is yours. Take the blue pill and stay in "slow land" or take the red pill and see how fast the Protege will go. :)

well tear off my head and shit down my throat!! That is why i asked every one for help on the forum so i can stop doing stupid things making my life more misserable and waisting more of my hard earned cash. who could i get to do all of that good a power stuff to my head you know valve job and all of that:p

JustinMP3 November-29th-2002 02:03 PM

no i am all about saving a little cash i just never broke my head :) before:( its not fun i broke the bolt tried to back it out, tried to extract it broke the extracter and tried to drill that out. its a real mess but hey thats what i get:( anyways i am going to tow it again to another machine shop and have them fix it. but a lot of machine shops will not touch the head until it is off the car. i dont think i can take it off??
