FS-DE Turbo Questions.
 

Hi all,

I've been doing a lot of reading about the FS-DE and force induction. My Protege is my daily driver and I'm looking for a little more oomph out of it. I am familiar with Turbo's as my summer toy is a '93 300ZX Twin Turbo. I've done a fair bit of work to my summer car and left my Protege ES stock. What I am looking for is a turbo kit that I can install myself into my Protege ES and still maintain the similar reliability.

Now some questions:
1. Would it be better to swap in components from the MazdaSpeed Protege (turbo, piping, ECU, etc.) versus purchasing a Turbo kit (such as the HiBoost kit)?
2. Will the axles handle the added torque? I know the MSP has larger axles?
3. Are there any other hurdles that I would have to overcome with installing the turbo kit on the Protege?
4. Are there any other turbo kits you can recommend?

1. Depends on what you're after. The MSP turbo is going to be the cheapest, easier, and probably safest way to go turbo. The gains aren't THAT great tho.
2. Shouldn't be a problem, lots of people have turbo'ed their P5/ES's without this issue.
3. Tranny rebuild would be a good thing to look into, Limited-Slip Differential would actually let you put down most of your power down to the tires without crazy wheelhop, and of course ... you'll wanna maximize airflow and get a cat-back exhaust. Turbo itself doesn't REQUIRE any of these but it would be a great help..

Basically, I want to make my DD Protege quicker. Now that I have moved to a city at a significantly higher elevation than where I was before, the car just doesn't seem peppy enough. With the MSP turbo setup, are the parts that readily available? I assume that if people with MSPs are upgrading, they sell their old stuff.

Is it really cheaper to go with the MSP? I heard that their are a few components that are different (i.e. radiator, not sure what else).

I guess it would be great to find a MSP front clip and do the swap. At least then I have all the bits.

Did the MSP have an oil cooler?
