I think a few of you are running "monster flow" air-filters on your P5s.
I was wondering how well they been working?

I've had good results w/an ITG foam filter on my 240z,
and would like find something similar for the new family car...

I've had bad experiences with foam filters. After running one on my CAI for a few months, I'd take it off and find dirt on the inside of the tube. No such problem with my K&N cone filter, which I've had on there for years.

I've also been told to avoid foam filters. They have a tendency to gradually disintegrate and allow foam particles to be sucked into the engine, which can't be good :eek: I used to own a 240Z, and I used a K&N because several of my friends had this problem with their foam filters.

AFAIK all of the common intakes for 99+ Proteges use K&N-style cotton gauze filters, and I recommend this type of filter. My car has a drop-in K&N.

I have also heard that foam is more resistant to air flow. I also just dropped in a K&N and fuel economy has gotten better. :) Although, my last filter was dirty, but not enough to fail a Drive Clean emmisions test. :) K&N drop ins on 2 cars now produced better mileage. :) :)

Actually, I have read that GOOD foam filters flow better than K&N filters. I think either one will flow much better than the stock paper filters.

No offense, but reading and experiencing are two different things. Where did you get this info?

Back when I had my 240Z, it was a well-known fact that a foam filter would make more power than a K&N, but K&N's didn't gradually come apart :eek: Clean foam filters are VERY non-restrictive, they just have problems that make them a poor idea on cars that see a lot of street miles.

However, I will admit that modern EFI intakes are different than what you'll find on a 240Z. Most EFI cars breath through one intake tube, while a 240Z breathes through at least two open-ended airhorns (and probably three, if it has triple sidedrafts).

I probably shouldn't compare how my dual SU's benefit from foam - vs - a modern FI setup.

It does however appear that the K&N filter is preferred for P5 owners?

PS. the other day I asked my honey her opinion on aluminum pedals for the P5,
by showing her a few examples.
Her reply was -
"Which pedals are on the 240? I don't want an imitation..."
