hey guys, I'm thinking of getting a lightweight flywheel, so I have a bunch of questions,

first, is it a good Idea to get the flywheel?
second, will this damage my engine in any way
third, is it hard to install or how long do you think it would take

do I need to upgrade the clutch in order for the flywheel to work?

and last is it worth it?

It will improve the engine's ability to accelerate since it will reduce the rotational mass that the engine has to move, so yes it will make a difference.

Shouldn't damage the engine as long as you get a quality flywheel that is balanced.

If you are going to take it apart far enough to get the flywheel out, you might as well put an upgraded clutch in although it's not strictly necessary. The stock disc will work fine with one of the upgraded pressure plates that Mazda Motorsports offers and it increases torque capacity to 268 lb/ft with the stock disc. That's more than enough to hold even 12 lbs of boost and should still be smooth. Only costs $181 so it's cheap insurance against having to disassemble it again to upgrade later.

As to it being worth it, well, you have to decide that for yourself.

I have a lighter flywheel, and it makes a difference. It revs quicker, and feels great!. Take Traveler's advice and upgrad the clutch at the same time, it will save you $300+ in labor costs later on to get it done at the same time.

Hey Linux, did you get the factory lightened 15 pounder or lighten yours? Or did you use the aluminum one? I'm thinking about one of the JDM 15 lb MP3 flywheels with an ACT pressure plate for my upcoming increased need for torque capacity and wanted to hear from someone that already had the part.

I have the Fidanza Flywheel. It is 8.5 pounds (aluminum), and is light as hell.

how much did that aluminum one cost u and will it work for the P5?
also what clutch did u get and how much was that? and the install

I got my Fidanza Flywheel from:

$290 shipped during a sale.

One thing to point out, the Fidanza aluminum flywheel and ClutchMasters stage 1 clutch from RR racing will only fit the 2.0L Proteges with the G type transaxles. I found this out the hard way. By the way, I have the flywheel/clutch combo, brand new in original boxes, for sale if anyone is interested, since it won't fit my 1.8L. :(
