Exhaust Advice
 

A few months ago, I bought a used Magnaflow catback because I'd heard from a number of people that it sounded really nice and I got a good deal on it. Well, I instaled it at the same time as my OBX header and MAM midpipe, removing all my catalytic converters. The midpipe didn't fit with the magnaflow quite perfect and so there was a pretty damn big leak directly under the front seats, but with beaus help and advice, I got it solved pretty quickly. The whole time I had the exhaust installed and was hearing the nasty farting, buzzy sound, I hoped it was just the leak. Like I said, I got the leak fixeed, and it still sounded/sounds horrible. So I'm getting a new exhaust.

My question is, who here has run an aftermarket catback without any cats? Not neccesarily on a P5, but on any protege, any price, that just sounds good. Custom is fine too, jsut let me know the brand of muffler you have. Thanks in advance.

They might all sound like crap if your going catless. Thats almost streight pipe on a 4banger. Your just gona have to deal with it, or do it right and get you a highflow cat. Witch if you decide you still don't want after you get it. you could sell it. TO ME!

Well it doesn't sound like a straight piped 4 banger, it sounds like your average fart can civic. Really pissin me off.

Do you think a silencer might cut down on some of the buzz?
I wonder if anyone here or over at msprotege is running the Racing Beat with no cats? That might be a little quieter and eliminate some of the 'angry bees'

Miller, Luke is running a OBX header and no cats with his CS exhaust....you've heard it.

TitaniumMSP (david) is runnign his MSP with no cats and it sounds awesome BUT the turbo quiets it down a lot.

You should really just leave the second cat in and buy a standard catback. the gain is so small anyway and the supercharger isn't SO dependent on an open exhaust like a turbo.

i have the srmotorsports cat back exhasust with the awr header and the wagnermotorsports midpipe. i had a resonator put in on the mid pipe. the srmotorsports catback comes with a resonator, and there muffler is really quiet. i love how my car sounds and like you, i am not a fan of the high pitched buzz. my 2 cents.

i'm not really a fan of the huge the high pitched buzz either but if there're 1 car i always love to hear is the subaru wrx sti!

Is it possible to get a protege to sound like that and um...(kinda scared to ask this question because I'll look stupid but what the heck)...what's the cat?

Just kidding, heres a pic. The cat is the small looking muffler like thing. In TX you have to have these to pass inspection.

The "cat" is the short name for a catalytic converter, a piece of emmisions equipment built into all modern cars. It basically traps some of the hydrocarbons produced from burning fuel and prevents them from escaping into the atmosphere. This is useful because complex hydrocarbons are just about the single most harmful thing that can be put into our atmosphere.

But they also restrict power and cost money, so removing them is easier for us car guys.

A friend of mine has an sti, and he's re-done the exhaust from the turbo back, including intake and (I think) header, it's either 3 or 3.5" all the way. I thought the stock set-up sounded good... it gurgles a bit, very deep and mean, and probably sounds about as close as you can get to the classic muscle car rumble as you can get on the smaller engines these days. I won't tell you what it does to me every time I hear it.... ;)
