Exaust setups on the 1.6???

Hey, guys. Quick question...

I seem to be one of the only ones here cursed with the '99 1.6 variant, so I'll give this a shot.

Have any of you had luck with aftermarket exaust setups for this engine? I'm looking for ideas and inspiration, and can find neither. =P If there are any of you out there, what are you running? Any mods needed?

Another question...the '99s were single-cat models except for Cali stock, correct? What are the chances one found it's way to...say...Vermont? =P

Thanks again...you guys rule.

hey DJ, I have the '00 1.6L, and as far as I know, they're the same car and everything. And Bosal makes a cat-back exhaust for the 1.6L. If i'm wrong about the cars being the same, someone correct me on this. But like I said, as far as I know, it's the same. So the Bosal should work :D

Eric F October-6th-2001 11:49 AM

The '99 and '00 1.6L cars are basically the same. The exhaust system is also the same between the 1.8L and 1.6L. The Bosal exhaust will fit both. I have it and I'm very happy with it. T304 stainless steel cat back exhuast with 54mm diameter tubing and a straight through muffler. The system was dyno tuned to make the most power from our engine. The exhaust was a bit loud (for my wife) but Bosal designed an insert that bolts into the muffler, thanks to the interchangable tip system on their new exhausts. It still has the nice fairly deep rumble to it, just not as loud. Bosal made a federal single cat version and a California dual cat version, so you're covered either way.

What up guys. I have a 99 1.6 as well. I know that Bosal makes a system for it but I have no idea as to where to buy one. I went to their web site and there was no place to order. If any one knows where I can get one let me know. I'm in the Atlanta area.

Carl, the three best places to order from are Mitch (Protege5online), Strano Performance parts, and Olympic Imported parts. The system should be under $400 shipped to your door. Tell them your from ProtegeTech.

Thanks Eric. I see one for 375 I'm going to order it next week. I'll let you know how things work out.

Hey Eric, did you ever get pictures of your exhaust online yet? I remember you saying on the egroup that you were going to, but I haven't seen them yet. I'd love to see those pictures.:D

Eric F October-6th-2001 08:16 PM

Not yet. Actually, that was one of the things I was going to do today, but it only got up to about 50 degrees today. I couldn't get motivated. I do have some pictures under the Photos section on ProtegeTech. They show the back of the muffler.

DJCatchem October-7th-2001 05:06 AM

Thanks again...

Thanks, Eric. You've been a huge help to me. =)

Now...to clarify....

Was I correct in that the '99 Proteges were all single cat except for California versions, or was it just any '99s speced to cali standards? It seems odd to me that I'd have a dual-cat version up here in Vermont unless the latter is true.

I guess part of the problem is that I've been driving older Toyotas and have never came across a cat manifold before. Is there anyone who has or could direct me to pictures of the cat and non-cat manifolds for the 99...or possibly know if there's a way to find out for sure without heading to a dealer or muffler shop?

I got the bosal!!

I still have the bosal cat backs available for 385.00 shipped in the US. I had someone order one up Friday. Hopefully he'll have it in this week & let us know what he thinks. But if you want to get ahold of it, e-mail me.

DJCatchem October-7th-2001 11:07 PM

Strange...I'm in Vermont, but my '99 LX definately has a cat underneath. I was just unsure of whether the non-cali models had that cat or the manifold cat. (Like I said...I've never come into contact with a manifold cat before, and it surprised me to hear that that's what's on my car...)

I looked at the Bosal stuff, and really like what I see. I think I may pick a system up if I can find a place to order one. (Those links didn't seem to have the right exaust in either of their catalogs...?)

Now...(Always more questions...)

Applying what little knowlege of exaust pyysics I have, I'd think the second cat is restricting airflow, and thus cutting HP. I live in Vermont, where we only have to suffer through visual inspections...would it be a problem to ditch the under-car cat outright and go with the Bosal system designed for the single-cat cars? Would there be any serious modifications if this is possible? (I ask because I'm obviously going to install the muffler myself, since I don't think Midas will do what I'd like them to do here...=P)

Thanks *again*.

DJ, are you sure you have a second cat under the car? Make sure your not thinking of the resonator, which is round and a little larger than the diameter of the piping. The second cat would be in addition to the resonator, and it flatter and more oval shaped. You could replace the second cat, if you have it, with the federal version of the Bosal system, but I don't know about passing the visual inspection. The second cat probably doesn't increase backpressure as much as the first though.

<<<DJ, are you sure you have a second cat under the car? Make sure your not thinking of the resonator, which is round and a little larger than the diameter of the piping.>>>

Odd...that may be what I'm thinking of. But looks just like the cat on the '91 Camry I'm selling...

<<<The second cat would be in addition to the resonator, and it flatter and more oval shaped.>>>

Maybe I'm mistaken, then. There's the manifold, a length of piping, the mystery object (=P), more piping, and the muffler. I thought I had a good grip on this exaust system...now I'm confused as hell. =)

<<<You could replace the second cat, if you have it, with the federal version of the Bosal system, but I don't know about passing the visual inspection.>>>

So the manifolds are basically the same on any of the 99-00 engines, regardless of size?

And when I say "visual" inspection, I mean:

"Lights work?"
"Yep."
"Good...here's the sticker."

Basically, if they don't hear the car coming in, and can see an exaust tip sticking out, you're golden.

<<<The second cat probably doesn't increase backpressure as much as the first though.>>>

I figured this was the case...but if I'm not being held to Cali emissions, and that *is* in fact a second cat, it could be beneficial performance-wise to remove it, correct?

The exhaust manifold itself may be slightly different between the 1.6L and 1.8L engines, but they all have that cat right underneath the manifold. The exhaust systems are the same other than some having the second cat. Sorry about the confusion, but I do know that most Proteges only have the one cat directly below the exhaust manifold, then a resonator, and lastly the muffler. I don't know for certain whether the Proteges with two cats have the resonator. You might see a small gain from a cat back exhaust and removing the second cat if you have it, but nothing major. I've heard that our engines respond very well to headers though. If you do have the second cat, a better option for you might be to get the Bosal header for the '93-'97 MX-6/626/Probe, and move the second O2 sensor behind the cat under the car. This would eliminate the more restrictive primary cat, and provide more power gain due to the headers. You could then still add the Bosal cat back designed for the dual cat Proteges and have the best of both worlds.

DJCatchem October-8th-2001 04:20 PM

I thought there were no headers that would bolt onto the 3rd gen 1.6...are you sure that Bosal will fit? Or will there be some modding necessary to drop it in? That would probably require at least modding of the Bosal cat-back at that point, correct?

I think if I could put a header and cat-back on this engine, I'd probably forego the FS-ZE altogether and start adding the CAI and internals instead...

This could be good news...=)
