"ES universal oval type muffler"
 

ES universal oval type muffler - found it on www.jdmhondparts.com under "Engine Parts" --> "Exhaust system"

k, i'm THIS close to getting it for my car ('99 1.8L) ... but a few more n00b questions:

-i want the 2.25 inch diameter piping right? not the 2.50 inch?
-if it doesn't come with a tip (i'm told it doesn't), i must weld one on right?
-if it turns out to be a coffee can/bumble bee exhaust, is there anyway to silence it without putting the stock exhaust back on?

If you are not going TURBO/SC or NOS...then I wouldnt recommend anything bigger than 2 1/4 for a 1.6 ltr engine.

The muffler looks sweet. For under a $100 that is a deal. The same looking muffler is over $100 from Magnaflow or Thermal R+D.

I have never heard an ES muffler before...I dont know what tone you should expect. FYI...you can get a nice tip from Magnaflow.com for a decent price....it would complement that muffler nicely.:bt:

I myself, am going 2.5 inch on my P5 with a G Power Medallion muffler off of my friends car. Of course...I am planning on TURBO for sure in the future...thats why I am going with the 2.5 inch.:D

well, i decided to go ahead and order the ES Universal S-Series muffler for my '99 Protege.

I'm hoping for a quiet sound, but there's only one way to find that out !

they are still on back order from a few vendors - i get the "it'll be in any day now" line a lot ... not worried about when i will receive it though - more worried about whether it will be a bumble bee on crack/ rice rocket sound ...


i'll post up a review of it when it arrives and gets installed!

well i finally got the muffler and found some time to head down to a shop. but i ran into a few problems:

the muffler is a bit shorter than the stock one so i need a tip that is about 8 or 9 inches long so that the exhaust gases don't melt the underside of my car.

can anyone recommend a tip that looks plain and simple? i'd say i'm looking for a stock look, but the stock one is like 1.5 inches in diameter!

anyone know what a muffler would look like with a 9 inch long tip that's about 2.5 inches in diameter?

i wanna see if it looks stupid (i have a feeling that it will) before i commit to getting it installed, or else it will go on ebay or something.

does anyone have any pictures that are sorta like that?

Are you just replacing the muffler or are you doing cat-back piping?
If you are getting cat-back piping then whomever mounts the muffler should be able to mount it so you wont have to have a 9 inch long tip.
If you have no other choice then I would say go with a bigger diameter tip so it doesn't look like straw coming out of your muffler...here is a place that sells tips

Why can't you just extend the exhaust piping to acount for the lack in muffler? The muffler shop guys should be able to do something like that for you, even if they have to make custom brackets for it. :dunno:

it's just the muffler.

i was thinking about that too (extending the piping before the muffler) but then the heat shield would be in the wrong place, wouldn't it?

The heat shield is pretty big...you should be able to mount the muffler with and extension of piping and still use the heat shield...you will probably end up with a 4-5 inch long tip.

Ya don't need a 9 inch tip man ,,, just get a regular tip and install that sucker and have them position the muffler where you want it ,, you can take a look at my muffler wich is way shoriter than the factory and you will see that the tip is out by the bumper
