Engine Swapping
Just out of curiousity, what type of engine swaps can be performed on the 3rd Gen Proteges? I knew we share the same engine as Probes and I've seen several Probe owners do some sort of V6 swap. Not that I'd ever want to do something like that, since our engines are quite tunable and responsive to boost as it is, but I was just being curious as to what the possibilities are. A lot of tuner communities rely on engine swapping to make something of their cars (Civics, 240SX, 6th gen Celicas, etc) so it just kind of surprised me that the Protege owners don't shine too much light on that topic. So what's possible, I have to feed my curiousity?

not many "bolt-in" swaps available...anything is possible with enough money...but otherwise you are limited to FS-DE,FS-ZE,FP-DE,ZL-VE,ZM-DE and that's about it

I wouldnt Mind a FS-ZE (J-spec Baby) Or actually a Mental addictions Short block (Ahh yeah)
Anything is Posible, I seen a GTI with a STS V8, I also seen 2 companies take the new Chevy HHR 4 cylinder Front wheel Drive truck, and Give it a LS6 Corvet motor swap, and converted it from front wheel drive to rear wheel drive, So with a BIG enough budget, you can really do anything you pretty much want. Hondas do it so much because there engines are interchangable & pretty much bolt into most Honda modles. I know of a Protege (Gen 1) with the MX-3 Motor swapped over to it. Ive heard about but have never seen a Gen 3 being able to take the same MX-3 Motor (1.8 V6) But I wouldnt want that motor, Id prefer the J-spec 2.5 (I beleve its a 2.5) Pushing 200hp but dont know about the compatability or whats involed in either motors swaps, or if either is a bolt on process. |
There was a guy who was going to put the kl-ze engine from the probe into his 3rd gen protege and it looks like it does work but he wrecked the protege so the project will be delayed for a little bit longer. Here is the thread on msprotege:

^^ I just wanted to say that.
The FS is used on both the 626 and the protege. The 626 uses the kl bam v6 protege. From what I hear its just as easy as a fs swap. I wouldn't go too old though becuase then you start dealing with obdI vs obdII. |
The only difficulty would be the wiring.

hondas rarely "bolt in " to other hondas
the k20 even spins the wrong way(or right way from everyone elses view point) to go into a B or D or H series car they have the support that the protege doesn't have yet they have 30 yrs of people messing with them protege has what...14 at best people just need to try stuff and whatever works will catch-on |
i was thinking of a Nissan SR20DET (from GTiR with SSS gearbox)
but the cost woulda been too high and since i found out our engines respond well to mods decided to fudge it hehehe |
i know this thread is'nt about HP
or other asian car makers... but the thing is, IMPO, there are thousands of hondas, ie. civics and b-series engines, to be messed with... that equals less cost and a broad knowlege base in addition. the FS is not a "bad" motor it makes enough power and can make more. so the difficulties associated with a swap don't outweigh the gains in performance and it also seems the motor is just now starting to see its potential as far as tunning, mods, and bolt-ons go but hey dream away... i wish i had the funds for all kinds of crazy things i want to try... Quaife SSS transaxle with custom gear-set mmmmm dreaming, dreaming |

When my MSP popped on the dyno I pulled the engine from my 1990 Taurus SHO which is a 3.0L duratec (basically)....it is DIMENSIONALLY the same size as the 2.5L duratec. It will NOT fit with extensive modification to the frame rails. The engine block IS longer believe it or not. In order to keep the belt system off the frame rail you'd have to cut the right axle and shorten it about 4-5" which would make torquesteer and wheelspin UNcontrolable. The protege bay is big enough but not without butchering the tranny/axle/mounts/suspension. I'm the only person I know who's gone this far with it in a 3rd gen. After getting into totalling up the cost I sold the car and forgot all about it. Putting an SHO engine/tranny RWD (midengine) would be MUCH easier....and actually quite possible. Super Matty P...our resident FI guru speaks.... Just because one engine used in the MX-6 and 626 is the same block used in the Protege, doesnt mean EVERY engine used in the MX-6 and 626 will work in the Protege..that's pretty screwed up logic. |
1 Attachment(s)
The SHO (3-3.5l) engine is completly diffrent from the kl series (1.8-2.5l). The only thing similar is there both v6's. And the kl is only some 75lbs heavier then the FS so its no problem.
Attachment 10538 Further more if you could stand to read the whole thread, I had some troubles most postes are completly retarted, youll see that there actually alot of parts that fit right up to the pro, axels for one. |
don't get me wrong
that KL swap is very intruiging to me and it looks sweet as heck in that engine bay i was surprised about the motor mounts and axles thats crazy if the electrical is not too out-of-hand it would get my vote but as of right now i say boost the FS if you got to have power 'cause as it sits seems like you'll have engine manegment issues to figure out, either way hrmm...i should strap a bag of dog food on the hood to see what happens to the handling |
i was wondering if this was possible with the right budget,(if i ever win the lotto this will be the first thing i try)a twin,or single, turboed rotary(preferably 20b) powered 99-00 protege with rear wheel drive.
