engine swap
 

hey all...i'm new here....and i live in toronto, ontario, canada...and i love the style of the Protege5...and considering about getting the P5..great price..less than 20000CDN......

i didn't know where to post this so i hope this is the right spot (sorry if it ain't...) but is there any avail. engines to swap into the P5 that fits???....130hp iz alright i guess..but i'd like to have more power than that!.....thx for your time!

FS-ZE...170HP if you get all the stuff for it: ECU, Intake manifold, ect...

i checked out that corksport site...pretty good (imo) since itz the only one i can find!..haha...
what about that FE3-T engine?....any site that has them? (price, pics, power, etc.)???

Too bad it would be next to impossible to fit in a 3rd gen protege. That engine is longer than the BP or FP/FS engines in all Proteges, and would require custom axles and motor mounts to even come close to fitting it in the Porteges engine compartment. Not to mention it uses a distributor based ignition system. It would be cheaper to just start with a WRX, and up the boost on it for more power.

Yes, but the FE-3 has more torque (160ft-lbs to 130 ft-lbs). The FE-3 also from what it says comes with a turbo option that will give it over 250 HP.

Sorry to be a Smart ass but its 260hp not 250hp, just thought id share. From the looks of it this a swap that you 3gen owners should be looking at.

:laugh: Sorry Jay, just trying to make sure everyone knows what they would be in for. Jesse you didn't mention the distributor based ignition system, engine wiring harness, throttle cable, and countless other little custom parts that would be needed. The biggest problem by far is the the FE3 engine has longer bore spacing than the BP or FS engines to accomodate the 86mm bore. That means the FE3 block is longer than the BP or FS. I'm sure the FE3 block has a bellhousing bolt pattern to mate to the larger and longer G series transaxle as opposed to the smaller F series. Even though the deck height of the FE3 may be shorter than the F2, it's almost certainly taller than the BP or FS blocks. That leaves you with probable clearance problems with the hood and between the strut towers. It might be possible for the 1st gens with their larger engine compartment, but it probably won't fit in the 3rd gen engine compartment.

The engine is mounted longitudinally in the Miata, and transversely in the Protege. The suspension (strut towers) won't be an issue in the Miata. If it fits under the hood of a Miata, I would agree it should fit under the hood of the 3rd gen Pro.
I was under the impression Mazda only had different versions of the F and G type front wheel drive transaxles. What else does Mazda have for front wheel drive?

Don't say 'you', I damn sure wouldn't do it. I get your point, anything is possible with enough time and money. That don't make it smart though...

You must be pretty handy with a wrench. I do almost all of my work myself in my garage. I wouldn't take that on at home...
