Engine Rattle Repair Question

Hi folks--

Now that I've been able to visit the FAQ section again (thanks for the link, Chastan!), I've noted that Mazda appears to have released a fix for the infamous, embarassing, and irritating cold engine rattle issue.

That said, I was wondering if anyone believes this fix otherwise changes engine performance and/or efficiency. My understanding was that this issue happened in large part because it helped the engine control emissions while cold.

If this fix stands to lessen fuel economy or otherwise hurt engine performance I suppose I'm prepared to live with the damn diesel engine noise while cold. I've hated it from day one, but it's not a big enough issue to trade efficiency for, in my opinion.

Anyone know if it's a clean fix? If so, I'll need to get the correction done soon before my warranty expires...

Thanks!

Earler this year I took my car in and had the rattle fixed. It worked pretty good, but if it is below 50 degrees It still tends to happen intermittently. But its free, so if you have time you might as well.

I've noticed no ill effects from getting the cold rattle fix.

I took mine in earlier in the year too but have not noticed any real difference in the engine rattle with the new programming. But as RHAGEL stated: it's free so you might as well.

I just removed the butterfly plates. Then I ported the runners. I got a little performance boost and no rattle for free. Just another option.:D

Rattle

I was going to ask about this 'start up rattle' when I had my first service -
Only have on 3000K on my new 5
What causes this? What is this 'fix'?
thanks

I can't tell exaclty what it is because it's a little technical and over my head. But from my understanding it is the variable timing in the valve plates that cause a "swirling" effect in the combusiton chambers or something like that. It's not bad and won't damage the car, it's just annoying.

Your dealer will have a new timing code to program the PCM to lessen this effect.

You can always bring it into your dealer. From my understanding from my dealer, they will install the new pragramming for you, if you want it.
