ECU upgrades

Made a bunch of phone calls today about upgrades to try to tune the ECU in our cars. Here's what I found

Apexi says the S-AFC will work since it functions in open loop. Only prob is, they don't have a wiring diagram to hook it to our cars. I was told we'd have to get a shop manual and find the right wires to hook it to ourselves.

Jet performance has an ECU upgrade package for our cars now according to the rep I spoke with today. The item # is 65002 and lists for $399. I found it through Landspeed www.landspeedracing.com for only $279. They send you a box to send to Jet with removal and packaging instructions as well as a questionaire asking what mods you've done to the car. You send them your ECU and they re-set some of the parameters internally and send it back. Unfortunately, there is no provision for tuning it yourself but they are claiming 9-11 WHP with this upgrade package. Turnaround is supposed to be 24 hours from the time they receive it and then they send it back to you via 2nd day air. The cost of shipping it back is included in the cost.

AEM is now saying that there may be a Plug and Play stand alone engine management system in the works. They are being secretive about it and won't go into detail.

The Link system used by Flying Miata is set up to attach internally to the ECU on a Miata. It will not work with the Protege and there is no plan to make one as of now.

It has been my understanding that the JET ECU will not produce any gains. Corksport has tried to use them in the past and gained nothing. I have not personally used any JET products. So, this is my little "buyer beware" response.

<Spoolin MP3> guy with a yellow MP3 and custom turbo setup is running a link management system. He frequents protegemp3.com

I think the AEM unit will be very nice...when it comes out. However, I'm sticking with UNICHIP. If it doesn't work out, they'll give me a full refund. :)

there was a post recently about the powerchip. i don't think this link was posted before:

www.powerchip.com.au/gfx/datasheets/Maz0058.pdf

when i emailed a question to powerchip, they responded "we have seen some US Mazda ECU and they use the Ford EEC-V. Do you know exactly what ECU your car uses?"

anyone know what ECU is used in the 2002 protege5? thanks.

negative responses are about their V-Force(and Corksport doesn't recomment it) Right now Traveler is talking about replacing chip in ECU, not about add on module.

I'd like to know what Spooling MP3 did to hook it up. I talked to Corky Bell yesterday and he said that it would only hook up to the Miata computer due to the Link hooking up internally to the ECU. I read the thread about him using one but I'm just going off what one of the people that helped design the flying Miata kit said.

As for the Jet ECU upgrade, well, I would hope it works. They are supposed to take it apart and re-set some of the parameters. I.e. better advance curve, better fuel curve. Since I found it through Landspeed for only $279, I figure it's worth a shot but you do have to give them custody of your ECU.... Better hope they are good brain surgeons.

I agree that the Unichip sounds pretty decent but as per pricing from my local shop, it will be around $1000 installed. It will only affect the fuel at WOT and the spark (supposedly) at any RPM. I'd install it myself but Dastek won't honor the warranty unless an authorized dealer installs and tunes it. Plus, the dealers are the only ones that have the tuning module required to set it up.

Well in my opinion i will not buy a JET chip if you gave me the money. I had a jet chip for my 90 probe gt and it was supposed to take the boost cut out and it didn't and when i called back they said the they don't know where the boost cut was? I also took it to the dyno and i think i lost HP with it. Also had a fried that had the same problem and changed the chip to another chip company and problem solved. thde chip company that did our chip was ERIC at E.L Prototypes(corksport). So don't in my opinion mess with JET nothing!!!
