ECU Tuning
 

I'm not sure if this topic was covered in the past but does anyone have any information about chips, ecu tuning, etc that is available for the Protege 5? If we could just tune for alittle richer, and advance the spark, i'm sure we could get some good horsepower out of that...

First of all, our cars already run too rich, so making it richer is a bad idea.

Second, there are no chips. Some piggybacks are in development however.

Thirdly, our ECUs do not take well to tuning, so a stand alone is your best bet.

Fourthly, do a search! :)

too rich? It's a 2.0L DOHC motor, that produces barely 140hp and is considered an ultra low emission car, are you sure it's running rich?

yup they run too rich.... and this topic has been discussed, so the search is the key to ure answers

belive us...we WISH there were performance chips you could just swap out....boy do we wish that...but there isn't at the momemt....and to be honest..we don't really expect to see any...

the only wholesale change out you could do at the moment is to get the ECU from a MP3 and change them out...but you are only going to get 10 hp out of that not to mention you will be required to run preimum gas after that.....the price of one of those ECU's is a bit cost prohibitive for only 10 hp.

I know the ECU is re-programable, and have heard Jet can do it for a price. The FS-DE motor responds very well to timing advance too, so its worth while to check it out. I prefer to trick th ECU and have had some good results with timing so I know. Also a header and some cam overlap lean the motor out just right.

The U-LEV emissions level is the only thing that contradicts a "rich" fuel math..."most" small, relatively low hp engines run rich stock (it is safer)...A lean engine squeezes a few more hp but with the price of detonation and ridiculous heat...

And a while ago the only place capable of cracking the stock ECU was Mazda itself. It is theoretically re-programmable, but needs to be completely "re-flashed" with proper fuel maps (Open Loop)AND signal processing software (Closed Loop). I don't think JET can do it correctly, and chips will never accomplish anything good on a FS-DE's stock ECU

The JSpec ECU will work, but you are going to have to make some heavier modifications to make the engine compatible with the ECu - i.e. Higher compression ratio, different cams, and the like. The MSP ECU will NOT work. An ECU from a engine using forced induction isn't even using the same principles as one who is normally aspirated.

And the MSP ECU has problems of it's own, trust me.

From what I remember the MSP's is just a stock ECU with new maps to handle the extra fuel and air for open loop, Callaway reflashes the stock ECU at port or something...and I heard that is why it is having so many problems...

Also regarding the J-spec ECU, it is not as simple as just modding an FS to ZE specs and plugging in the J-spec ECU...It is true that it is for an engine with higher compression, higher redline, etc...But I think it is also OBD-I and the harness does not just plug into ours...You would need to rewire the entire engine bay and basically convert an OBD-II emissions system back to OBD-I...
