Cruise control
 

I'm driving a 2002 P5 Auto.. I realise theres not a ton of auto people around, but I'm hoping someone will be able to answer my question anyways.

When my cruise is set for around 105km/h .. and I have to slow down for whatever reason.. when I resume.. it resumes normally, but right around 100 the car shifts down (runs at about 4k rpms) for a few seconds and then shifts back up.. does this on flat roads, and up and down hills..

Is it supposed to do this? If it is.. why?

Yeah I noticed my car is an absolute maniac when resuming.. I don't intend on using it that way, but I had just gotten out of the break in period and was testing it out..

Basically, I was asking to find out if anything was broken.. doesn't make sense to me that when running on a flat surface at around 2800 rpms (and close to the resume speed), that the car would gear down, run at 4k for a few seconds and shift back up..

Yes, when you floor it, it downshifts.. except that when its floored, normally it would just shift really late, instead of shifting up, down and up again.. this is what made me think something might be broken.

Actually I found that the cruise in this car is very smooth compared to a lot of others I have driven. I like it but I also do the accel and then the resume.

Still can't figure out the MAN button underneath. Why bother? It is almost as if Mazda is telling you "here's your cruise, but if you press this button you don't have any" :confused:

By the way, Fraay, do you work on the south side around Argyle and 75th by any chance?

Nope.. I work in St Albert, and live downtown..

How hard/expensive??
 

I got yet another speeding ticket. How much for a cruise install with parts and labour factory or aftermarket??? Thanks guys!!!!

I have this problem too! It happens to me when I first engage the cruise control. I maintain a certain speed with the gas pedal, then engage the cruise control and release my foot. Just when i release my foot from the gas pedal, it would downshift for 3-4 seconds (at 75mph!), then shift back to normal.

Our cars are known to rev high at highway speeds, so I don't think it's necessary to downshift.

So when the "auto-downshift" happens, i would just disengage and re-engage the cruise again (yes, it will shift back up to top gear the instant i disengage the cruise). Usually it doesn't happen the second time i engage it.

It's so annoying. :mad:
