Cold Air Intake for 3rd gen !
 

I'm thinking about putting one under my hood and I was wondering what kind of performance gain (in HP) I could get ? I also asked my mazda technician and he told me that as long as I put the one they are selling (the only one that are supposed to fit well the protege ;) ) that my garanty wouldn't be compromised. Is it the same thing everywhere (I live in Qc, Canada) ? So that is why I'm doing it :D ! So .. what's your performance gain ??? Also does it really give you a new cool motor sound :cool: ?

Simple bolt on mods, will not void your warranty unless they can prove that the mod you did is what caused the problem you're having worked on under warranty. You're only looking at maybe 1-4 hp for an intake. you could get any of the intakes.. get what fits your taste.. if you want a shorty, get a shorty... if you want a CAI, get a CAI. depends on your budget too. you can do the work yourself... it's very simple.

What's the difference between a short and a long intake ? The sound ? The performance ?

it rocks, sounds great too, yeah only about 3-5 +whp, haha, but i figure when i hit the switch its more than that :D

I was thinking about this. I know that the rated HP #s always seem exaggerated and the gains are not linear with each additional mod. But what if you used a CAI with maybe extrude honing the intake and throttle body, maybe larger throttle body? You think we could get more than 10HP, maybe 15-20?

You could maybe get 10HP, if it was about 30deg outside and you were going about 70mph. That forced cold air could really raise the HP, but in the sweltering summer heat, there is no way you will get 10HP.

TO answer one of your questions....YES someone has been lieing to you....just to get you to buy THEIR stuff....sounds like your dealer or the mechanic there is feeding you BS just so you will do business there too....I think you need to challange him on that one, and if he doesn't come clean.....I would be doing business somewhere else.

So now that I know what cams are for, I searched the net and found some MazdaSpeed camshaft; one for intake and one for exhaust. Do you have to change both or you can just change one of them ? Also, I dont want my Protege to become as louder as a Mustang GT kind sound... will this modification do that kind of thing !?

It also says that a MazdaSpeed exhaust camshaft can give you as up to 10HP and a Mazda Intake camshaft as up to 12HP !!! Does anybody has had that kind of performance boost ? 'Cause if you change both, it means a boost of about 22HP ! Sound very big to me ...

A common practice of manufacturers is dyno testing one product (a cam for example), but on a car that already has intake, exhaust, headers, etc. Plus, dyno tuning alone can be valuable in itself, especially after modifications have been done. It is possible to gain 2-3 horsepower just from doing some fine tuning on the dyno. I have a cold air intake on my Civic, which is a smaller engine than the 2.0l pro you are talking about (I think?). Anyway, it made some difference, but nothing earth shaking. I would not have paid retail price for one (AEM was about 200? I got mine for about 140) It does offer a little more pull, and a nice sound, but alone it doesn't seem to warrant 200 dollars....next purchase is a turbo! :D

Changing your cams can be done singly, I believe some people on this board have done just the intake side. As for noise they aren't nearly as noticeable as dropping an exhaust system on your car. However, if you are looking for real horsepower gains I have read on the board that these cams are not real suited to turbocharging, which is where you really want to take a vehicle of this displacement if you want cheap horsepower.

One nice thing is that MazdaMotorsports is selling a relatively blank intake cam which you can have machined to your needs (if you know what you are doing). Easy way to waste a cam if you or the people helping you are not very skilled.

Take the easy route. Get your CAI and exhaust now. Go somewhat conservative on the exhaust (about 2.5" would be about right) and plan for a turbocharger. Cams and internals are always a bitch to take out and work on anyway.

Actually, those numbers are the results for the FP-DE 1.8L.
