Cat Back Systems

Has there ever been a consensus on if there is truly a superior cat back system? My brother has some magnaflows on his mustang that sound amazing. Granted it's a V8, but it still spun my interest in the magnaflow system for the P5. It seems though that it is the second cheapest option, making me a little bit skeptical. Will I receive the same performance from a magnaflow unit, or should I save the extra and get an HKS, Borla or JIC?

I think performance-wise they'll all be about the same. Most all exhaust systems are either 2.25" or 2.5" and mandrel bent. The only difference would be how they sounded and if they fit correctly.

From my personal experience I like Borla, Racing Beat (very common) and Greddy

Will I need more than the 2.5" if I'm running WOMP at like 10-15PSI?

Roddimus Prime Oct 19, 2004 11:17 AM

nah, the blower is limited to 12psi (14psi if I upgrade it). I'm running 2.5" and I think someone listed the chart as saying 2.5" exhaust will be best on cars with 180+hp up to like 350hp.

I would go corksport they make one for the p5 now. I have it on my sedan and it sounds awsome. I think its 2.75" but I could be wrond though.

Corksport looks and does sound nice. I'm interested except for that it's not cat back, rater it's header back, making my car catless, which would be a pain in the ass for inspections.

go to an exhaust shop, they make the best if its a reputable shop!

there really isn't any specific system that is that much better than the other.....performance wise that is. where one system differs from the others is how its made....get a QUALITY system....it will hold up better...

and if you do know of a QUALITY muffler shop that has a mandrel bender, have one made....it will certainly save you some bucks.

HKS is a really nice exhaust- it has a nice solid tone, not to raspy and not to low. I highly suggest anyone looking for a serious exhaust exspecially when running boost, go for HKS.

Ok, so I have found a muffler shop that will do all of the piping and everything and just order the muffler I want and they're chargin $100 for piping and custom hangers...what muffler should I go with? He reccomended the magnaflow, but I just was curious if anyone had heard any others that they think sound superior. I'll have to see what he has, but if I can get an idea from people what the best sounding one is, I can probably get it and have it installed. I have to have the istallation done by saturday, so please let me know if you have suggestions. Also, should I go with 2.5" or 2.25" piping?

Roddimus Prime Oct 27, 2004 06:31 PM

are they using mandrel benders or crush bends?? If they are using crush bends (proabably based on that price) then get the 2.5".

vielster Oct 28, 2004 08:59 AM

Are crush bends going to give me less performance???

tonkabui Oct 28, 2004 10:23 AM

crush bends don't have a true inner diameter that's constant because of how the machine bends the tubing. a mandrel bent tube preserves its inner diameter all the way through. if you're staying NA with just bolt on mods, you won't notice a difference. if you are going FI, then you might notice a tiny bit of a difference. and the magnaflow system is nice sounding. not too sure about the construction though. the pipes seem mighty thin compared to the Racing Beat. there haev also been reports of rusting of the pipes.

Roddimus Prime Oct 28, 2004 10:46 AM

what he said.

if I were buying an exhaust I'd just spring a little extra and get one that I KNOW to be quality and designed for my car with performance in mind. With some of the mods you have planned it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to skimp on the exhaust!

vielster Oct 29, 2004 10:19 AM

So it sounds like to me that the best bet is probably the Bosal/Borla sytem. I've heard the Greddy's are good too, but $600 just seems like a lot for some metal pipes. Any other suggestions to look into?
