Car just died!

So I'm traveling down I95 South yesterday, and the car just cuts off... I mean just dies. Pull it off the side of the road, and try to fire it back up. It cranks, but nothing! No fire. I put my hand over the exhaust while the wife cranked...no gas smell whatsoever on my hand or in the exhaust. Left sitting for a few hours, came back out.

Go back in the car, turn the key to the on position. The temperature gauge pins hot... I got out and feel the engine. It's cool.. I mean really cool. Back in the car, no check engine light appears when the key is put in the on position, or ever. So no CEL, no fire, no gas... After trying a few other things, I gave up and had it towed.

Anyone have any thoughts? I was thinking maybe the ECM took a dump, but just wanted to get some other thoughts.

dunno, dont sound good though!

my ES has acted strange on the interstate a time or 2. but no death by roadside... was going ~ 70 down I85, had AC on, wipers on, radio on... lights "flicker", engine "dies" for sec, then acts right again.. wierd stuff.

Timing belt broke?
(It powers the water pump as well).

Take the timing cover off and crank it - see if the top pulley spins.

Timing belt has < 10k miles on it. It was replaced just recently, so I'd be hesitant to think timing belt. This also wouldn't explain why i get air but no fuel out the exhaust, and especially no CEL. Should get a cam sensor failure CEL i would think. Also, the engine shows no signs of overheat, and the gauge was pinned a full 6hrs after the car was running, so it should have cooled even with no water pump :)

I actually hoped it was the t-belt. Easy fix, cheap, but doesn't quite fit.

When you turn the key - do you hear the fuel pump?

All fixed...blown fuse to the ECU... I feel like such an idiot now.

LOL, you're no idiot. I know myself and a lot of other people never think of an
electrical problem until we've eliminated everything else.

:nono: naa.. Long as its fixed!

Always check the simplest things first ;)

Thats good to remember. Glad you got it sorted.

You are not done, No one else has blown an ECU fuse yet (that i know of).

Inspect wiring & find out what caused the fuse to blow.

yep. I saw the first post and was about to suggest that. I had it happen to me, but there was a reason the fuse blew.. my primary oxygen sensor heating circuit shorted out as soon as the sensor got hot.. and when it shorted out, it killed that fuse, which then kills the whole fuel injection system.

If it dies again, make sure your oxygen sensor doesn't look damaged. Mine looked fine, but it died on the way back from the body shop after accident repairs so the insurance company paid for the new sensor.. but perhaps it died of old age (was at 82k miles at the time)?

i was gonna suggest that too!!

i think running rich will cause the ECU to blow a fuse to prevent engine damage
i've seen two cars doing that, both of which were running pig rich

better check that out, and don't use a higher rating fuse so it won't blow...if the fuse doesn't blow, you engine will!!!

blowing ECU fuses is as common as seeing girls naked next to the highway
