CAMs

Wondering where to locate Mazdaspeed intake & exhaust cams...corksport is running out. Also, are the Jspec cams equal in performance to the mazdaspeed ones?

I'm looking to get cams put in while I have the head prepared for the boost!

steve_protege August-31st-2003 09:42 PM

Im looking for some too. For my 1.6 liter to be exact. I haven't gotten much luck trying to locate the cams either. Ive been told to just keep the stock ones and have them polished and ported a bit. It should help some, but not a whole whole lot.

The only other way that i know is to grind the mazdaspeed specs on to blank cams.

Whatcha mean?

PhatTrax September-2nd-2003 01:13 AM

what he means is that you purchase a blank cam, one that has not been ground to any specs, meaning it doesn't look bumpy or anything, then have someone grind them down to the specs of the mazdaspeed cams. I believe some company is having this done soon. Was it Cork Sport? I can't remember.

How much would that costs? How much does a blank cam cost? Id need two of them so if they are kinda expensive, then I might just forget upgrading them and just have em ported/polished.

nice... looks like I found what I want for my bday :) Oh, another thing, with the high compression pistons will I need to run 91+ octane gas?

2.0GT September-11th-2003 10:14 PM

somebody can correct me if i'm wrong, but with higher compression pistons, and lower octane gas, the potential for knocks and pings in the engine greatly increase.

That's what I thought. I believe there is a higher risk of detonation too, or am I wrong on that?

mrpopnfresh September-12th-2003 12:43 PM

All of that is true, but it will be more noticable in a F/I application. The stock compression ratios of the pistons are good for F/I, the actual pistons themselves could be beefier.

As for the cams, if you're going to go F/I, don't waste your money. The stock cams are less aggressive which means you could run higher boost. That is, as long as you have reinforced internals.

PhatTrax September-12th-2003 05:10 PM

I'm probably going to just stay N/A for a long time since CA laws are a pain in the arse. I don't want an instant fail because my turbo doesn't have some BS CARB sticker.

2.0GT September-13th-2003 10:27 AM

are there any benefits or dis-advantages to switching only one of the cams, like only the exhaust to a more aggressive grind?
