Thats the avg. price to swap out the factory cams & install some aftermarket ones?

I paid around $220.00 when i had mine swapped out.

most shops (at least in my area) charge $60/hour. The whole job shouldn't take more than 3 hours.

im doing mine myself.. it may take over 3 hours but its not hard to do you just match up the timing marks...

It's not a terribly hard job. Just a pain to take off the lower timing cover. You should have a bit of experience before you try this though. Best way to get a price is to call the dealer and ask them what the book time is for removing/replacing the cams. Then multiply whatever they tell you by the rate of the shop you want to use. Since everybody should be using the shop time guide to do your cams, it doesn't matter how long they actually take to do it. I'd guess that shop time would be about 2.5-3.5 hours for the job. Just make sure they put it in writing.

What I'd like to know is has anyone changed the valve springs with the cam(s)? Is it posible to do without the SST?

I was told by the mechanic (who bought my Ninja) at my dealership that he thought it was 4 hours from previous jobs because of the timing belt. He said that there probably wasn't an actual "shop time" in the book, but based on timing belt rates and other things it would be about 4 hours. He told me he'd do it on the side (@ the mazda dealer) for $100 if anybody is interested.

Yeah 4 hours dealer time is about right. But I too, will do it for a flat $100 ($50 more if you want the POS timing belt cover reinstalled).

Add about another 4 hours for springs, and a top end gasket set to the parts list. Might as well get some head work done too, as long as its off. Maybe big valves and a 5 angle all around to boot.

BTW has anybody used the FZ springs when swapping to the FZ cam? I just noticed today that Mazdamotor Sports now has a listing for the J-spec springs. I'd assumed they were the same till now.

I also noticed that MMS now lists BOTH billet cam shafts, where there was only an exhaust before.

I was going to spend large to get some stock cams built up and reground, but going with raw billets is much cheaper. If you read this Mastertech, I got the cams Monday, and dropped a check in the mail today. But if you'd like them back -

I spoke to my mazda dealership and they quoted about $500 to do the job! Part notincluded! They were nice enough to call mazda usa and say that I was consitering the work and flat out said my entire engine warrany would be void- per mazda usa. I question the legality if that statement. Basically I was told that they would be looking under valve covers if I have any engine problems. Stay away from North Penn Mazda in the Philly suburbs for perfomance work.:mad:
