Brake warning light wont go off
 

Ok. I changed my clutch line, refilled my fluids, checked my brake pads, and rotated my tires yesterday, and now my E-brake warning light won't go off. I didn't mess with any lines but the clutch line, and I bled the system properly. There isn't any actual pressure on any of my rotors because I drove for a while to check the rotor temp and they weren't even the slightest bit warm. Is there a sensor on the cable that I need to adjust or what? Help me out here!

hmm.....strange indeed. I would check the adjustment on the E-brake just to make sure. Also, get the rear of the car in the air and without the e-brake on spin the tire to see if it grabs a little.

do you have rear disk or drum?

Rear disc... It's an 03 ES. Already checked the rear wheels. They spin freely in the air, and I can roll the car back and forth with my left foot from the seat just as normal. BTW, where is the E-brake adjustment? Thanks for your help, Matty!

e-brake can be adjusted a few different ways, I'm not sure exactly how it's done on the protege though. Some use a ratcheting-style adjuster on the handle. You just ush the button in and pull it up and down about 10 times. others have a little proportioning linkage on the line going back to the brakes.

I'll look through our service manual and see how this car is adjusted.

Update... Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. By the E-brake adjustment (seems to be just a tensioner nut) There is a single wire that grounds out when the handle is pulled, and has no connection when the lever is down. (spring loaded) Is this not the signal for the E-brake light? I tried both disconnecting and grounding out this wire with the lever both up and down, and the light refuses to go off. I then took out the cluster and checked the harnesses on it. All seemed fine. The wire running from the E-brake is white and tan w/ brown stripes, but immediately runs into a quick-disconnnect plug and the wire color changes to solid green. This wire disappears under the console and I would rather not pull it out. There is no wire on the guage cluster that matches the solid green one, so It must go through something else first. Where else is this wire grounding out? This makes me want to kill people!! GRRRR!!!!!!!!

I'm not exactly sure, but it seems that I've heard of this happening on another model car in the past. I think it may be something to do with the ABS system, not just with the ebrake. I think the brake light may come on when any number of things(sensors, fluid, etc.) may have been knocked around, not just on the back of the vehicle, but on the front also. You may not want to limit yourself to just the rear of the car. Of course, I'm an idiot, so I don't know.

I suppose this is possible, but there is a seperate warning light for the ABS. I will check all the calipers and bleed the system again and see.

check your brake fluid level. this happened to me and my friends dad who is a mechanic said that if the brake fluid is low, this light would stay on. i checked it and low and behold the level was low. i put some brake fluid in and the light turned off.
