Auto to Manual
 

Is it possible to swap out an auto for a manual transmission? What other components besides the new transmission, fly wheel, clutch, brake and clutch pedal would I need to complete the swap? An ecu perhaps?

i know that my friend with a 90 accord 4 door had a shop down here in VA do it. i didnt cost too much either. i mean he had to buy a clutch and a manual tranny and all but the brackets for the clutch pedal and everything else was pretty much there. my advice is do what he did and wait till you destroy the auto, then tackle it if you are serious about it.

just buying all the parts alone would make it cost more than if u traded in ure auto and bought a manual... on some cars its worth doing an actual swap, but some cars liekt he protege, u might as well trade it in and get the maunal, it will save u alot more in the end

yeah, probably would be cheaper. it just depends on the situation. if you have alot of money invested in your vehicle then you might want to go with the swap. dealerships rape you on aftermarket stuff. sometimes they even deduct money for parts.

This is a late post to this. This is really for information only purposes...considering that there are so many people asking about tranny swaps for the Protege. Prior to the 03 Protege I have now, I owned a 95 Ford Prode...yes I said it...I owned a probe. I did a complete Auto to Manual swap on that. Here is the list of items I purchased and a few notes.

Shifter
Shifter Linkage
New Clutch
Clutch Pedal
Clutch Pressure Plate
Clutch Master Cylinder
New Drive shafts(driver side and passenger)
ECU from salvaged Manual Transmission Probe
Center Console from salvaged probe
New rear engine mount...different than auto

I have a friend with a shop and lift...therefore he and I did all of the work ourselves. Total investment into the swap was just shy of 750.0 I managed to get my hands on everything but the new mount, ecu and clutch for only 350.00 through an auto recycler. The new rear mount was 85.00. The ECU was 100.00 with core. I don't recall fully what the driveshafts cost me but it wasn't too expensive. Also...I'm not sure as to if this is the case with the protege but the bolt pattern on the auto and manual trannys were different. The manual trans had 1 more bolt than the auto...this didn't cause any problems though because the other bolts lined up. Overall it only took 1 day to do the entire swap. The hardest part was the clutch pedal and master cylinder, considering that the brake pedal had to be removed for installation of the clutch.

Again this was on a 95 probe, but it did have a similar 2.0 in it and I know that Ford and Mazda are very similar(same) in many cases. BTW...the car will not run correctly if you do not change the ECU. The air/fuel ratio is different with the auto and manual trannys. One more note for thought...the engine wiring harness is the same, however because the manual tranny is not controled by the ECU you will have at least one wire that will not be connected to anything. This formerly controlled the auto trannys torque converter. I hope this helps...by the way...I'm thinking about doing this again with my 03 Protege...if anyone has these parts...I may be interested.
