AEM vs. Injen
 

Hey all,
I have a 2002.5 Protoge ES and I have a few questions about intake systems. Bear in mind that in high school (10 years ago) I was into 60's and 70's muscle cars, but I don't know a ton about modern engines and whatnot. I'nm used to carborators ;-)
I was interested in getting an intake and was curious about the pros and cons between the AEM and Injen systems. Can anyone who has one help me out?

the injen race division has been proven many of times to be one of the best intakes made. i personally have one and love it. AEM is a crap dryer hose with a shit filter. IMO But it does do a little not what the injen does though. well as far as intakes go :) Go with the injen you get what you pay for. you can get one on www.protege5online.com

I assume it's the same model for the Pro5 and Pro ES right? BTW how is the sound with the Injen as compared to the AEM SRI?

:rolleyes: Both Injen and AEM will get you about the same gains. Both companies have excellent reputations. Both intakes will net you about the same 2-3HP. The difference is really in the pricing. If you want to save money and get the same gains, just get a Ractive or Ebay intake.

Thanks for your input Doomer. What about water intake? Is it really bad on the AEM SRI? Is the Injen CAI totally immune to taking in water?

Yet another opinion...

I think both AEM and Injen have a great product. The intake is down low so you're getting cooler air. Intakes like Vibrant and Ractive are taking in air high in the engine bay, where the hottest air will be. Injen "might" be better as the filter is in the front fender, not low in the engine bay like the AEM. Cooler air = more power.

As for ingesting water, stay out of puddles more than a foot deep and you'll be fine. That's from the AEM perspective, the Injen might be a little lower. There's a bypass valve you can buy, but the concesus is that it's a waste of money and robs you of any power gains.

I personally have the AEM and i love it.... it sits low and its good looking.... gives a low growl i definately recommend it...
I've also drove another Pro with an Injen CAI and it sounds nice also.......

I say both intakes are quality products and both are reputable companies.... you cant go wrong with either one of them..

Any open intake is not going to be totally immune to water, but realistically its not an issue. The only way you're going to hydrolock your engine is if you drive through a few feet of water. If any body is dumb enough to do that, prepare to suffer the consequences :). I've driven through huge splashing puddles with my AEM and have not had any problems after a year. The AEM water bypass every body asks questions about is probably going to negate any small gains you'll see with the intake in the first place.

As for Short RAM vs CAI, each have their benefits. The CAI will probably not get as much heat soak as a short ram, but it has longer piping. The Short Ram has shorter piping but may get some engine heat. Some heat shield work would help out as others have suggested.

In the end, I say it still boils down to how much money you care to spend and looks. Each pretty much gives the same gains. IMHO the sound is worth it alone :).

now i guess i did come off as hating AEM, thats not true. Just according to the research i did before i bought my intake i always found the injen one step ahead. Also so did lots of magazine testers. "you know the What intakes best test" but i have never actualy heard or seen the AEM on our cars. But hey i have injen and i love it. PS dont drive in big deep puddles and you will have no problems:D

Adventon.com has part ID #: INJEN RD6060 listed as Protege 5 2.0l/MP3. I have a 2002 pro ES which. Am I correct in assuming this is the part for my car as well? they don't have a listing for Protege sedans.

Yup that would work cause the ES is the same as the MP3 and the prtege 5 is just a hatchback version of the ES.
