AEM or INJEN INTAKE

I've dont some research and AEM only sells a short ram intake and INJEN sells a cold air intake for a '03 MP5 A/T. Which intake is better for performance? Any other suggestion on performance parts would be great, such as headers.

Thanks

Esteban Toledo March-4th-2004 03:46 PM

Both will give minimal gains. Personally, I'd choose the short ram. It's easier to install. Also, you have easy access to the filter. That being said, I think the injen looks nicer.

kid prodigy March-4th-2004 03:49 PM

Thanks Esteban Toledo, but do you know if there is any real difference between those two?

Esteban Toledo March-4th-2004 04:00 PM

The general consensus is that they'll both provide similar gains.
However, some will argue that cai is better. Both injen and aem have dyno #s for their intakes on their websites. The injen's dyno , however, was from an mp3.

Do you know any other performance parts worth buying?

Esteban Toledo March-4th-2004 04:21 PM

Intake, header and exhaust sounds good. Wagner motorsports is producing a header. Someone just dynoed their car with it. I believe they had a 7whp gain. You may want to replace your 1st cat w/ a high flow cat. It's also suspected that the midpipe (the pipe that connects the two cats) is a major restrictor. This may help you: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showt...ghlight=wagner

I searched for wagner headers but it said that it still was a project.

Esteban Toledo March-4th-2004 04:32 PM

I imagine they'll be availbable soon. www.essentialspeed.com have some. However, they're much more expensive.

kid prodigy March-4th-2004 04:44 PM

Wagner's headers sound great. I'm a newbie racer and I don't really know any racing terminology so any info that would make my car better would be great.

Stick with the short ram, it's cheaper, safer, and negligible difference if any in gains from the injen...

kid prodigy March-5th-2004 03:51 PM

Thanks macdaddyslomo. Do you have any other suggestions that i can do for better performance under the hood ?

macdaddyslomo March-7th-2004 02:03 AM

yes..under the hood you can do cams, underdrive pulleys, phenolic spacers,j-spec intake manifold, high compression pistons, adjustable cam gears

kid prodigy March-7th-2004 03:32 PM

Can you get me some prices for those items...and another thing, do you know what a good time for the 1/4 mile is for a MP5 A/T and if you do know the time what items did that person have on his car. Thanks

pr5guy March-8th-2004 11:29 PM

i just installed the AEM intake in my car and the throttle response is awesome now goin through the gears. Also it sounds almost like i got a turbo under the hood at idle and its very throaty at acceleration.

I've done some further research and it says that the AEM short ram intake gaves you at most a gain of 5 HP and the INJEN CAI gives you at most a gain of 8 HP and for some cars a max gain of 15 HP.

kargoboy March-9th-2004 05:30 PM

You're not gonna see those kind of gains on your car, at least not without other modifications---4hp max with the intake itself, if I recall the dynos correctly.
If anyone out there got 15 from their Injen I wanna hear about it!

kid prodigy March-10th-2004 03:34 PM

What the difference in sound if I got the AEM or the INJEN ??

pr5guy March-14th-2004 11:43 AM

im not sure of the difference in sound, im not sure what the INJEN sounds like. to be honest the AEM intake is almost like a cold air intake, its not taking in air from the engine compartment most of the air is commin in from under the car and from the grills in front, hence making it colder air then it would up closer in the engine bay. A lot of my tuner head friends made note of that how it pretty much is a cold air intake.

prtygy22 March-18th-2004 11:05 AM

I HAD A RAM AIR INTAKE, AND I GOT AN INJEN CAI AND IT PULLS A LOT MORE :D . ESPECIALLY WHEN IT HITS ABOUT 2700 AND 4500 RPMS. IT IS REALLY GOOD IN TOP END (THAT IS WHAT I AM GOING FOR), HOWEVER I DON'T NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE IN A LAUNCH FROM A STOP. I'D GO WITH AN INJEN.

johnaks36 March-21st-2004 11:10 PM

I have an injen and i am very happy with it. The car feels a little more responsive and quicker so if I had to do it agian i would go with the injen.

madmazda April-2nd-2004 10:55 PM

get an injen cold air. i have it and its pretty loud

00 protege es April-3rd-2004 08:49 PM

is the injen cai alot harder to install than the aem? shouldn't the cai get more hp because it's denser air?

Mine is ordered and will ship out this week coming up. The dyno was 7whp and 10lb/ft at the wheels....thats a nice bit for just a header and still retaining the stock cats....I'm replacing everything and I'll let you know how it turns out.

purePro5 April-4th-2004 04:07 PM

Definately go with the Injen. Install is NOT hard. Try:http://www.adventon.com/

They usually have a better price than anyone else. Also, with an AT, don't expect a real street burner. The best bet for you would be to jack up the car and put anew car with manual under it. :D

Oh, and by the way, Proteges have 1 header, not multiple headers.
