2000 Protege 1.6L, I need some pointers

Ok i just got myself a 2000 Protege Lx with a nice 1.6L and a 5 speed. It's in awsome shape with a mear 50k miles on it so im looking at doing some modding to the current engine. I've heard amazing things about how robust these 1.6L are so im thinking forced induction is definatly the way to go. I need your help though, I need recommendations for high quality products designed for this motor.

Cold Air Intake
Exhaust
Turbo(and all accompaning parts)

Money isnt much of an option atm, and im looking at doing the intake and exhaust within the next month, and a turbo this summer. Any pointers you guys have would be appreciated, thanx.

well as of yet their is no turbo kit for the car, you need to piece it all together by yourself, as far as intake and exhaust, you will feel little to no gain from these mods, actually their was a huge problem with the intakes messing shit up, and causing problems.

whitePhals2000 December-11th-2004 08:29 PM

Well damn, that is the exact opposite of what i want to hear, got any advice otherwise so i can actualyl get some power out of this thing?

THEGOLDPRO December-11th-2004 08:50 PM

lol turbo is all, everything else is a waist, that is if you want any useable power.

OK so piecing together a turbo kit sounds like the answer, what kind of problems are the intakes causing?

THEGOLDPRO December-11th-2004 09:38 PM

bad hesitation, loss of power in some, i had an intake on mine at first, and it blew balls.

whitePhals2000 December-11th-2004 09:56 PM

Thats seams a little odd, whats the story on an exhaust?

luwe December-11th-2004 11:52 PM

from what i've seen, the hesitation comes from vacuum leak so the sensor goes out to lunch

For the turbo you will ned exhaust anyway...just talk to an exhaust shop to make you a custom catback 2.5"....then call Andy at Wagner motorsports and purchase from him a 1.6L turbo manifold and downpipe, and the turbo oil lines...then go to ebay and find a T25 off a 2nd gen eclipse...also purchase a BOV,boost controller,fuel-air guage, boost guage,..go back to your exhaust shop and have them make the intercooler piping...talk to goldpro about fooling your MAP sensor into thinking there is no boost, and get a stage 1 or 2 clutch....

lol you forgot in intercooler, you said intercooler piping, but no intercooler :) then you also need better injectors if you wanna run more then 5 psi, also a new fuel pump, and a fmu of some sort, and you also need to modify your stock fuel rail, and tap your oil pan, and cut your bumper to fit the intercooler, and cut a bunch of metal off the front of your car to fit the piping, then you need to run coolant lines to cool the turbo, and blah blah blah, its a hassle either way, so dont even think about it, unless you have really thought it out, and have the resources, and tools, and or alot of money for a shop to do it.

Sounds like a royal pain in the ass, but at least its doable. Am i looking at a motor swap being a better choice?

THEGOLDPRO December-12th-2004 04:03 PM

with what motor????? no swap you do is going to yield the gains of a turbo.

whitePhals2000 December-12th-2004 04:58 PM

I dont plan on it yielding the same amount of power, but its easier to find turbo kits for the 1.8 and 2.0 isnt it? Sometimes a proven product is better than making your own. That and a bigger engine also yields bigger potential for power

THEGOLDPRO December-12th-2004 05:51 PM

d0od if you want to waist money, and countless hours doing a motor swap do it, you will need the motor, the tranny, the ecu, the wiring harness, the engine monts, the axles, new exhaust, god knows what else, then you neeed to waist more money on buying a turbo setup for your new motor swap, do it if you have the countless thousands to spend.

macdaddyslomo December-13th-2004 08:07 AM

peicing your kit together will cost the same or less than an off the shelf kit for the 2.0....and once it's on, most turbo parts a universal...BOV's,turbo upgrades, intercoolers, water injection systems,FMU's,etc...they arent usually made for a specific car
