1999 1..6 engine complete 350.00

I bought a 1999 1.6 engine today for 350.00 off of ebay. The motor is complete and has only 16,000 km. I was wondering if anyone could help me figure out what mods would be benificial. Port and polish the head and intake, bore it or what? Could it be bored to a 1.8 or 2.0? If so, will the heads from these motors inerchange? Do they make a stroker kit? Also, does anyone know how much the Haltech costs, or could you point me in the right direction?.. My engine in my car runs fine for now, I Just happend to find this one cheap and wanted to make a project out of it.....Thank you ,......Kaleb

I saw that motor on ebay, I was going to buy it but then I realized it was the 1.6 instead of the 2.0. Do they use the same block and just different rod lengths? I have no dea about this. I say build it up for some serious boost. Get forged pistons and rods with about 8:1 compression, get someone to install some oil squirters below the pistons, and boost the shit out of it.

Thats is what i was tring to find out.(If it could be bored to the 1.8 or 2.0, and use those stock or other internals). I would also like to know where i would be able to find the cams listed above.

So instead of spending money and time on a swap, the alternative is to build a NA rev monster out of the 1.6.
I can respect anyone that builds an NA monster, but unless you are actually competing in drag races,....why go NA? One, it costs way too much money per horse power, two, it will idle like crap, and finally three, you will never get that much power from the 1.6. You can get about 240hp from it with a monster $5000 turbo setup, and you will never touch that with NA for less than $8000.

Wow that's a lot of useful info. I'm gonna e-mail Corksport later and see how much it would cost to import one of these suckers...

big_ben Aug 6, 2002 02:24 PM

Sorry, I still disagree. There is no reason to put the money into that motor to keep it NA. FI is the way to go. Less work, less money, more power.

Great discussion. I'd like TheMan to expand on this:

Do the normal NA upgrades to the bottom end.
What exactly would those upgrades be?

If you take the turbo route with the 1.6, what work is essential to keep the motor from blowing up? Is the stock 5-speed tranny up to the job?

Yeah, I'm a newbie with lots of questions- so sue me.

TheMan, do you know if corksport can import theese heads? Also, what bottom end mods will need to be done? I dont know if they offer upgraded connecting rods etc....Also, you said the 1.6 is basically the same as the b6 series motor correct? Do you have any ideas of wheather or not this motor will fit into the festiva with little dificulty?..Thanks TheMan, Nice to have desent convo. without everyone slamming the shit out of each other..(see protegetech).....Kaleb
