15W 50 anyone???
 

anyone know anything about using 15W 50 full synthetic in there engine. I heard that its good stuff but i was thinking two heavy. Any thoughts

yes, that would be too heavy. however, you CAN run Mobil 1 0w-40 w/out problems. ITs actually approved for use in cars specing out xw-30 oils. Ive used it for 16K miles and NO probs at all and GOOD gas mileage too!! I got 27Mpg's w/ shifting at 4K rpms for daily driving.

HOWEVER, i would HIGHLY suggest that you try Saab's 0w-30 oil at your local Saab dealer for $4/qt. as its really European (its imported) Mobil 1 0w-30 GM Longlife Oil and it blows away the 0w-30 you can buy from wally world.

I, however, use Castrol Syntec 0w-30 which is a Euro reformulation and meets the same specs as Mobil 1 0w-40 and its REALLY imported from Europe-Germany to be exact! ITs green in colour and smells VERY different from ANY syn. PAO/Ester oil ive ever smelled before!

If you stick with any of these 3 oils, youll be fine. But, do me and all of us "Oil Heads" a favour and run the oil at least 5K miles!! IF youre unsure and just cant believe itll last that long, then drain at 3K, and have an analysis done to see if 5K or more miles is okay! And remember, thats exactly whay these European oils exist-for long, long, very long drain intervals.

I have a spec sheet of all the oils on the market as of last year right here There is even a handy score chart of all the oils on the right side.

well i bought two cartons of moble 1 15W- 50 and put it in both my pro's and so far all is good. actually think it feels better. But i wanted to check because i thought it was a bit heavy but i was reading the box and said it was great for high performance cars and turbo cars as well as diesels. but i dont want to break anything :)

Basically you want to run the thinnest oil you possibly can in your engine. I usually run 2quarts Mobile 1 0w-20 or 0w-30 and the rest Mobile 1 5w-30. Try that mix and get back to me on it. Basically the thinner oil means less resistence which means longer engine life. The Reason Diesel engines require the thicker oils is because they run insane compressions thus they run a lot hotter and the thicker oil will provide a different level of protection and lubrication which is needed at those temperatures.

Gregersonsalvag: Your list is out of date. The german Castrol Sytnec (referred to a Red Label) is actually European Castrol SLX.

Also, the ONLY reason to run a very light VISCOSITY (there i NO such thing as "weight". the "W" on the bottle stands for Winter) oil is to increase gas mileage for federal CAFE reasons. Our engines in Europe are reccomended to use a 5w-40 oil or, a high viscosity xW-30 oil like Castrol's new 0w-30 SLX or a MB 229.5 oil such as Shell's HElix Ultra 5w-30.

ID use for your next oil change eitehr Kendall 5w-40 (if you can find it. contact a local distributor as itsonly $3.50 a qt.), Saab 0w-30 (made by Mobil and is a euro Mobil 1 oil for GM longlife spec. very good oil) at $4/qt from Saab dealers or Mobil 1 0w-40. I rant he latter for almost 16K miles and loved it. Although my vote is for the new Castrol SLX 0w-30.

and no thicker viscosity oil does not necessarily mean better protection. if it did then, you and i both should go to a BMW dealer now and buy Castrol R 10w-60 at $13/qt!! Awesome oil and imported from Europe but not needed. Also, look at www.americanagip.com they seel botha 5w-50 and 10w-60 syn. and are PAO/Group V based oils. I may try their 5w-40 syn.
