1.6L spark knock

Hello,

I have a 99 DX with a stock 1.6L and it is exhibiting spark knock usually with the A/C on and when fully warmed up and under moderate to heavy acceleration. I cannot use 87 octane. There are no OBD codes logged, and no other driveability symptoms. I have tried revving the engine high under full load to "expel loose carbon", and injector/chamber cleaning treatments. I have found that 89 octane greatly reduces the occurence, but does not stop it. The car drives well otherwise, with good power.

An old post by BRSEXTON showed his similar experience with a 99 1.6L.

Does anyone know if there is a TSB detailing this problem, and what the course of action is?

Thank you.

time for new plugs it sounds like. How many miles are your engine? When was your last full tune up? When did you last replace your fuel filter?

What I would recommend is this :

New spark plugs (stock, not fancy brand) DOUBLE CHECK GAP

Inspect and replace spark wires AS NEEDED

Fresh fuel filter (probably never been done)

AFTER the new fuel filter pour in one can of "Berryman's B12 Chemtool" into the gas tank (can get at walmart)

check all other fluids for correct level and quality...especially coolant. Should have a nice Neon green color, not dingy doo-doo- water color

Do these things and then put about $5-10 worth of 87 octane in your tank. See how well it runs then. If it continues pinging you may have a faulty EGR valve.
