1.6l problem
 

I have noticed recently that whenever I am slowing down the car jerks as if it was a bad shift. The car is a 99 pro lx 1.6l w/auto tranny. Could it be the air intake I made for the car? I used a 3A cone filter and air intake tube intended for a Civic. The guy at the speed shop said it would work but I haven't had anywhere to put the MAF, so I have been running with it unplugged. Any help would be great.

That looks like your problem right there.

That brings me to my next question. I cut a hole in the intake pipe for the MAF and sealed around it. After connecting the MAF and resetting the ECU the car will not start. If I disconnect the MAF it will start. I'd like to hear from anyone who has adapted or custom made an air intake to fit the 1.6l. I really can't afford the Injen right now, so I am trying to make do with what I have available.

Well if I were you, I would save up money for the Injen instead of trying to ghetto rig something that could go wrong. Keep in mind the MAF brand new from the dealer is ~400 dollars. The 1.6 engines don't gain much from an intake so may as well take your time and do it right. Because off the odd MAF design it's hard to custom make your own intake, that's why most people have the Injen.

noob question: what's a MAF?

i cut the whole section that the maf sits into out, i cut the whole filter box up.

You should try to remove the maf portion from the stock upper housing. I removed it and added a 2.5 inch exhaust tube to the end of it with filter, It's now a short ram.

It probably won't make much of a performance gain, but the sound is awesome.

There is a site which has pictures of how to do this, does someone know which one???

if the car wont start most likely the sensor is backwards in the hole, it does make a difference which way you put it in, also if there are any air leaks around it or past the MAF you will have the jerk and hesitation, alot of people get that jerk with the injen one also, but definately put that MAF back on and get the car running properly again before you start doing any more mods. my 2 cents, thanks

just a random thought.. i did that once... bought a new box just for the MAF housing, and cut out the housing with a dremel... if anyone wants to buy that off me.. they definately can. i just need to find it in my room here. i'll let it go for a small fee. :D

i did the same way thing on mine. use and adapter on the end of the stock intake tube and stuck a filter on the end and two weeks ago i noticed the protege shifted really hard or not at all at higher speeds so i took it in to the dealership after putting it back to factory. they ended up replacing the mass air flow sensor and that took care of the problem and the engine runs better then with the ghetto intake. with the set up you said you have your engine is running way to rich so either get a cai or leave alone because it kills hp to ghetto rig.
