Without knowing the gear ratios, tire size, and redline, it would be hard to say. I'm guessing that you have a rev limiter, so you shouldn't have to worry about over-reving it.
Generally, most 5 speeds are good for about 35 mph in 1st, 55-60mph in 2nd, and 80-90 in 3rd. With the SE, you probably can't hit the limiter in 4th due to hitting the governor first (assuming there is one), and 5th is definitely limited. Should you be able to find gear ratios and redline, the formula is: Tire diameter x rpm ------------------------------------ = Speed in mph 336 x Final drive ratio x gear ratio 336 is a constant that works out the units. Tire diameter for a 185/65-14 tire would be 185mm/25.4mm/in x 65% x 2 + 14, or 23.469 in. Most tires are actually a little smaller. For an example of how this works, I'll use my car as an example. If I had 185/65-14 tires, a 4.105:1 final drive, a 7000 rpm redline, and a 3.31:1 first gear. Putting the numbers into the equation, you get. 23.469 x 7000 ------------------ = 35.984 mph or about 36 mph. 336 x 4.105 x 3.31 If you had all the numbers, you could figure out the precise numbers. |

Saving that $40 everywhere they can. I guess they figure they aren't performance drivers. Most base model cars don't come with tachs, but just about every car with an automatic comes with a tach.:D The logic fails me. |
My old Tempest didn't have a tach and was 5spd, the dumbest thing I've ever heard of, and driven, I couldn't turn the music up too loud, had to listen to the revs hehe

Cruise Control? In a DX? Do you have power windows and door locks too? Sounds like you have an LX, not a DX. The DX and LX have the smaller 1.5L engine with a 6500 rpm redline. Only the ES has a 7000 rpm redline (with the 1.8L engine). Other clues are remote trunk release, passenger-side seatback storage pocket, and electric remote mirrors. The LX has them, the DX doesn't.

The remote trunk release is the lever next to the gas door release. Assuming that it's a US car, and not a Canadian market car (options and names likely differ), the other clues to the 1.8L model (ES) are the adjustable height drivers seat (second lever on the side of the driver's seat), and pushbutton (rather than lever) ventilation controls.
The ES also has rear discs, and a rear sway bar (no, I don't expect you to look under the car right now). All three (DX, LX, and ES) have DOHC engines, so that won't help. I don't know what the visual difference is between the 1.5 and the 1.8. |
