Trunk Release Won't Open Trunk

Okay, everything was working fine when I left the house but when I got to work, the problem happened.

When I pulled on the trunk release lever by the driver's side seat, it didn't open the trunk. There doesn't seem to be any tension.

Could I have broken the cable or the cable disconnected from the lever some how?

How can inspect the cable and it's connections? Where do I look?

How can I open the trunk in the meantime, keep in mind, my car keys don't work!

One other thing, my gas lever doesn't open the door either. How can I fix this as well.

You will have to pull the carpet up right around where the levers are and check to make sure the cables did not snap , also if those cables are good then you will have to fold down your seats(if your key won't work in the trunk,GOD knows why) and crawl in there and pull the paneling down and figure out why the gas cable does not work and why the trunk lid cable is not working ....

When I'm in the trunk, I'm pulling the panelling on the gas tank side correct?

Once the panelling is removed, what am I looking for? Where does the trunk lid cable attach to the latch?

Ya, I have no idea why the keys don't work. My g/f had the original ignition key which would work but all other spare's didn't. Then one day that key wouldn't work either. Could there be a problem with the lock mechanism? If so, is it repairable or do I need a replacement? Is this something I could take apart and fix?

unless you are as good as a locksmith , I don't think you want to take those locks apart, I could not even tell you how to start doing so ...... I know when you pull the panel off in the trunk of the car there is a emergency release that you can use to open the gas lid to fill the car up with gas, as for the cable , you will see that running to the door latch inside , just get a flash light and look for it , and you basically have to look for a snapped cable and check to see if it is snapped or at least find out what is wrong , the trunk one should be up on the trunk deck somewhere and run down toward the bottom of the trunk where the latch is , but i am not sure as I have a dx and don't have the pop-trunk luxury

I had this problem (except for the key thing) and I opened the trunk and looked under the carpet/liner and to the right, the cable thing goes into the latch. Make sure there is enough tension cause if it doesn't have enough tension the latch wont open cause the distance that the cable is pulling isn't enough. And that will fit your symptoms. #1 No tension #2 working fine then not. And as Bruce said where the handles are on the drivers side, pull the carpet and make sure the little assembly for the trunk is secure, 'cause again if there isn't enogh tension the cable won't travel enough to unhook the latch.

i have a 98 pro and this has been one of my problems. well, i can`t really tell you how to fix this problem entirely but what i`ll say is basically what the others have said but to add this. take the inside cover of ur trunk out, the rear light section, and look at the lock. to the base right, there should be the cable wire leading to the trunk opener, pull it out and release the tension on it and with the inside trunk cover still out, try opening it from the front seat area. if u do this right maybe after a couple of trials, it should work, but here`s the messed up part. it is very much possible that when u put back the inside cover, it wouldn`t work, then u know the cover is getting in the way of the trunk release. but if this doesn`t work entirely, i`ll suggest what every other person`s being saying, try tracing ur TR cable and see it it`s cut. if ur cable has an outer rubber coating, then check and see if it's loose on the driver end and if it is tight on the trunk end. i can`t really help u with the key aspect. i`m sorry. well good luck.;) :D

Well, the problem with my trunk not opening was really not a problem at all. The cable wasn't snapped nor disconnected from the lever. Rather, it was the latch release sticking. I just gave it a good coat of lubricant and all is well.

The same goes with the key not working. I just sprayed the lock with some graphite lock lubricant and all is well.

Now, to fix that pesky gas cap cover. There is cable tension and the lever works but the gas door doesn't open. It could possible be something wrong with the latch. Any help would be appreciated.

Broken springy thing? I really dunno. How do you put gas in anyways?
