P0440

Hello all,

I've been repeatedly getting a check engine light with a code P0440. When I take it in, the mechanics keep telling me that it's because the gas cap is loose. I got the cap from the dealer, so I know it's designed for my '96 protege. And I also know that I am putting the cap on tightly. It clicks at least 5 times.

Could this code be something more serious? My gas mileage has been great, getting over 32 mpg with heavy highway driving. It's been a while since I've done mostly city driving, but my OBD software estimates it at about 24 mpg. The car is running just a good as ever. It has 60,000 miles on it.

thx

The code your getting is for the EVAP system and should have no effect on the drivability of the car. Most problems I see from evap are useually caused by loose fuel cap or broken O-ring ,dirt on sealing surface for fuel cap , CDCV stuck (valve in driver rear wheel well in filler neck - it should make a click when you turn the ignition on) or evap control valve stuck ( rear of fuel tank - rust clogs the exhaust filter in the valve).
