OverDrive, what does it all mean?

Ok i have a 98 SE prot, with 1.8L OD. Now as I understand, OD is always ON, and when you push the button it turns OFF (duh). But I mean is OD in the ODD position for High Speed driving (like the higway) or can it be used in everyday driving? I guess I just dont understand the purpose and/or advantage of it.

You can leave the car in overdrive all the time if you like. Many owner's manuals swear that you get your best fuel economy this way.

indeed, actually the car stays in OD all the time....the button disengages when you shutdown so i guess its made to run that way. OK thanks guys!

i only turn it off when "racing"...i dont think there is much of a pwer difference tho...when i race from a roll i shut overdrive off and downshift to 2nd at about 40 or so and then punch the gas and when i have to i tap the shifter up to 3rd...it might be kinda hard on the auto tranny to downshift but i let it pull back and rev up before hitting the gas again to not mess it up even more...i like the way it takes off when i do this tho...
