Loss of power

I guess I have been bragging to much about this little car. This morning on the way to work I noticed a miss before I left, I thought it was just cold but soon found out its worse than a little miss. It doesn't really miss as certain RPM, but more of a certain position of the gas peddle. As I roll off the gas in any gear and at any rpm, when I roll back on it slowly, it will fall on its face and jump back up. I guess fuel filter or fuel pump or maybe something else, I know a man can spend a lot of time and money searching out a problem like this.

Anyone had or know of a fix for a problem like this. or maybe a good starting point.

The car is a 1995 1.5, no mods that i know of..

sounds like it could be the throttle position sensor- though i'm not sure where it is on a 95 protoge. A bad TPS would occur when getting on or off the throttle, specific to the position of the gas pedal... it is possible for it to be direction dependant (accel only / decel only).

I'm sure this has an electronic mass air flow sensor, but the old style MAF was just a spring loaded door to detect how much air was passing by. Those can have a similar dead spot, but I think it would match the RPM, or specifically a set engine load.
