How to properly store an engine??
hi all.
as you can see from my sig i have a built bpt sitting on a pallet at work which i bought two weeks ago. i realistically can't afford the computer for months yet so it'll have to sit there. today i went out, pulled the plugs and squirted crc (you might call it wd40?) in the cylinders so i don't have ring and rust issues later. the engine has only 2000km since its rebuild and still has oil in it. my question is.....will it be okay sitting like that for a few months or is there something else i should be doing to keep it from deteriorating??? |
I am gonna keep this breif;
Cover the motor with a tarp or comforter, keep it under a shed or something that can cover it from rain and snow and so forth cover up all the openings , like the disty , spark plug holes and the throttle body.... you should be set after this Bruce |
thanks bruce. do you also know if its okay to leave the oil in or should i drain it?
personally i don't think it should be a problem but i really have no idea. |
For years, my uncle has put a table spoon or two of oil into the cylinders every 2 months that it was stored.

thanks for the help guys! :D

Originally posted by TheMAN keep oil in the crank case, pour half an ounce or so of anti-freeze down each spark plug hole and reinstall the spark plug... remove the disty and put something to plug the hole... remove the alternator also... lastly, cover the whole engine with a tarp Bruce |
Originally posted by TheMAN antifreeze has very good anticorrosion packages... all engine building shops use them to store their engines, a good junkyard would do that too... serious car diehards (such as the miata guys) use this method also heh...the rx-7 folks use ATF to clear out seized engines...:cool: |
