Gauging interest...phenolic heatshield
 

First off, I'm making one of these for my 1.5 z5, regardless of response:Heatshield

The idea actually works but since no one make anything for the Z5 motor so it's going to be a custom fab job. I've found a place locally that sells/cuts phenolic

It wouldn't be much more work for me to render a CAD file and have a whole batch cut then to just trim one by myself. If I could get the piece in under $60 each, how many takers would there be?

i'm not sure aobut the heatshield thing is the to replace the heat shield? or does this act as a pre heat shield and go where the gasket is? i'm very interested cause even though its a small gain its better than nothing and under 60 is in my price range how long do these last?

We're talking about an insulating gasket that goes between the head and the intake manifold...normally the intake manifold soaks up a whole lot of heat and in turn heats up the air passing through it. This helps that from happening. Colder air is better for power.
I imagine you can expect to get 100k out of it without any problems, it's not a wear related item. It really depends how often you remove the intake manifold.

when do you think these would be ready and have a definant price? I am really interested in this.

I'm trying to figure out if there's enough interest to justify going through the CAD process...otherwise, I'll be manually cutting a single sheet for myself.

So if there's anyone else interested, pipe up or I'm not going to bother.

This sounds a lot like the the custom 1.5 turbo manifolds someone did awhile back.

This sounds interesting. Davens, approximately when would you need to have the money? Also, would you ask for a whole amount at first, or a deposit (and then the rest)?

It's still a good 60 days off...I can get the stuff made and then you order/pay for it. I'm just trying to determine if it's worth it or a ball park of how many to do.

why don't you get one made and then post pics, at least that way it will amp people into wanting to get one ...

This gasket is for a Honda engine.

Yeah, if that's the case, I still end up cutting my own. Then turn around and do the CAD work, paying up front to have a batch created...
Sorry, that's extra work for me.
A. I cut my own and I'm done
B. I do the CAD and have the entire batch machined

Those are my choices. Either way, I get one...I was just trying to let the community get in on it.

Sorry, that's simply not going to happen. I've already said I'm going to spend the time cutting my own OR doing the CAD work and dealing with getting a batch machined.

Why?

To put it bluntly, manually cutting myself one and then doing a batch for the board would obviously be a waste of time...what? Maybe 2 people expressed interest...I wasn't even asking for money up front. Just some confirmation that I wouldn't be blowing money/time/energy.

Next time someone whines " Oh, perfomance parts for my car are so hard to find..." I'm going to smack them. It's your own damn fault.

I believe davens is going to have these done within a couple of months, which is not that long, and he is not asking for the money up front either. Also, since he has a 98 DX, it should fit your car as well. I believe the intakes on 1.5L 95-96 and 97-98 models are the same.

Sorry, there's just not enough interest to make the CAD work and production costs worthwhile.

I've got a sheet of phenolic I'm cutting by hand...I'll try and do before and after temperature tests.
