Driving home... and.....

Alright, heres the story
I'm driving home from work (first day of work, FYI) and i notice the Charge Battery light is on. I think to myself Ohh **** but am only around 5 miles from home so I brave it. I putt down the road about a mile, and notice my speedometer and tachometer are not working, plus my engine temp is at H and my airbag light is flashing. I slam on the gas, to test, the car accelerates then almost dies. This pursuades me to stop the car and call Daddy for a tow.

Some more information: Around 2 weeks ago my Cousin was barrowing my car. She turned it on and smoke came out of the AC vents. Not alot of smoke, she said at first she thought it was her breath, but it smelled bad, like either burning rubber or (hopefully not) electronics. A couple days after this I jumped in the car and started it, just to see what would happen. It was fine, other than the stench. But, after a while i heard a repetitous clicking noise coming from under the passanger seat and when I shut the AC fan off it stopped, after playing with the AC fan for a bit the noise was gone. The smell still came out of the vents after I drove for a little while. I think that the AC fan motor burnt out somehow? The smoke came out right after she started the car so it couldent have been the heaterbox burning something.

So, My question is:
What could cause the first part? the guage problems? My dad says its the alternator (the battery is dead now) but my gut says its worse. Secondly, the AC fan still works, but I still ge that smell, could this be related to my guage/alternator problem or did that not cause anything more than the stench??

i forgot to include that while the guages were not working, the lights and stereo were
