Check Engine light?? Help!

I have a '95 DX. I got it used with no owner's manual. Just today the light on the left side of the dashboard stays lit that just say "CHECK" and then has an icon.......I'm assuming that's the Check Engine light (I believe it's the light right above the seatbelt light?)?

Can someone please confirm what this icon is? I don't know why it would be coming on. Just had the car checked out yesterday at the shop and it was OK....got new plugs, oil, airfilter. Checked oil and it was full.

If anyone can help, thanks!:dunno:

It definitely was cold outside but the Check Engine light didn't come on when I first started up. I had been driving for a good 10-15 minutes already and was just driving around looking for a parking spot when I remembering seeing it just come on. Then it still came on an hour later after I parked it and started it back up. Just weird since I just got it looked over by a mechanic. If it stays on, is this something I should take to a dealer or can I just take to my mechanic? I really don't like dealers much.

Skater...

I have no clue if your car is fuel injected or not, but the most common cause for a lit check engine light on a FI car is a gas cap not tightened properly. Make it click a few times when you tighten it. The check engine light should go out in a few miles once proper tank pressure is restored.

Gas cap was on tight but for grins I clicked it tight a few more notches. Went for a drive and check engine light stayed on the whole time. Then made a stop close to where I live and when I started the car again, check engine light was off. Drove around the block and it stayed off.........so I don't know what going on. I'll just have to see if comes on again.

Thanks for all the replies!

thats only true for OBDII and up cars. Older cars don't have this problem.

Check your O2 sensor(s)

make sure all your spark plug wires on on all the way. If your light is on constantly it is something minor. If the check engine light is flashing pull over immediately. Flashing means something big is wrong. Your car may have just thrown a code for some reason. well good luck
