car brake

Hi all
I got some problem with my car brakes. when i start braking, there is sound like "gerrr.........." i dont know if i ran out of my brake pad or something else. but i have to go to the airport tomorrow, i have to drive on high way. is it safe?
by the way, the sound came out suddenly. so i dont know if it is possible that i suddenly ran out of my car brake pad or something happened to my car?

I know its always hard to describe a brake problem, and "gerrr" definately won't help. Was it a hard, rumbling sound, or did it sound like something is scraping against something else? Also, do you feel any vibrations, and is the pedal travel any longer or shorter? Also, how was your stopping distance affected by this. Because if you really have to go to the airport, I would keep my distance very well. But, if you have time in the morning to stop by a brake shop (try to find an open one on Sunday), I would recommend to come in atleast for a brake inspection. I used to work in the brake shop, and I have seen things where the situations were so bad, you would not think they would be possible to do. But there are people out there who would do amazing things. Anyways, you definately can't all of the sudden run out of pad. A usual pad life is about 30K miles. Also, brakes should be checked about the same amount miles. Most likely, you have either worn pads, and/or rotors, but like I said, "gerrr" does not help much. Please explain just a bit more. Thanks.

Im guessing when he says the "Gerr" sound he's referring to the scraping of the brake pad, because there is no brake pad left. Before this gerr started happening, did you ever have any sqeaking from your brakes?

I've got the answer to this! AFTER MUCH agony and suffering I fixed my baby. I purchased my car with what i thought was bad brakes. Took them off.. walaa... nothing wrong with them.. hmm okay maybe something cheap about them. Went to Autozone got the cheap 16.99 pair, put them on same noise... suffered for about 3 months thinking okay the noise will fade away.. hmm NOT. I replaced the rotars since they couldn't be turned again, and still no silence. Went back to Autozone got the ceramic pads for 36.99... never heard a sound since.
Then I got smart and checked the computer for the specs on a new 98 and they come with Ceramic so my cheapiness made me suffer. :) along with my lack of research. My suggestion.. rotars may need to be turned or replaced, and different pads...

just a thought
