98 protege auto tranny problem

hi all. I'm sure this has been covered before...infact, i found a thread which seemed to be what i wanted...and now i can't find it. i can't remember the magic words i put in which worked...ugh

anywho, my friend has a 98 protege with the 4 cyl and an automatic.

I just don't normally work on smaller cars, and i've never done anything with a transmission before. any thoughts on the issue? any hints? thanks

sounds like 2 seperate issues...

sounds like burned up bands fir the 1st gear problem, and the o/d kicking off and on sounds like an electronics issue..kickdown switch maybe?
