97 check engine light

Hello all, glad to have found this site. I just purchased a 1997 with 70K 3 days ago. This morning the check engine light came on for no reason. still runs like a top. no different than before the light. Is there a reset for the light or any popssible fix? Thanks.

My 98 does that occasionally.. it hasn't for a bit.. but since i only drive my car on weekends.. it sometimes needed a warm up before driving.. i found that if my car studdered at all, the engine light would come one.. usually stays for about a week or 2.. then goes off.. It also happened when i lost a gas cap and put on a different one.. didn't like it.. didn't go off till i got a new one from Mazda.. Don't ask why? i dunno.. I wouldn't worry about the light at all...

first the mazda fuel cap has a seal that seals the fuel tank from the outside and if it is loose ,missing or the wrong one is put on your light will come on (usually code P0455- gross leak detected)fix the problem and clear the code or disconect the battery for 20 seconds. If the engine light is flashing this means you have o problem that can damage the catalyst. Most check lights are for evap or emissions problems and don't affect the running of your car.

that recently happened to my car. if you just bought it you shouldbe able to take it back in and have them look in on it, for me, i needed a new catalatic converter.

Thanks for the info. If it was the cat. wouldnt I have any other symptoms? It just passed an emisions test. I will check the gas cap tonight

I tightened the gas cap...it seemed loose. I tried to reset the computer by just taking off the - battery terminal. It didnt work. Was this done correctly or is there another way I should reset the computer.

It worked. Unhooking the neg. terminal, hitting the break, then letting it set for a few. No more CEL. Sweeeet!!!
